$secure is corrupt

I am using Windows XP and get a message that “$secure is corrupt.” It then goes into chkdsk and given every file a new default security number but the system looses many programs and OS functionality. I can only find general references to $secure with a number of possible causes but no repair without a clean OS install. Does anyone know how to repair the corrupt file without messing up the OS?

This could be related to a virus or worm infection. I would suggest that you update your antivirus and anti-malware programs and run a through scan of your drive. If that doesn’t turn up anything or if the problem persists, you may want to look into HijackThis[/url] and see if the good folks who man their help forums can cleanup your system with you.

Thanks, but I scanned with several updated antivirus/malware and the system reported clean. Decided to build a new PC and go to Windows 7.

Unfortumately, you are in a realm of Windows that a repair/reintstall will not touch. A clean install is the only way to replace the corrupt file(s) and registry settings. I had a similar circumstance some months back, but I use disk images for backup. I just restored my last good Windows image and Documents and Settings image, and all was well. There was no need to restore the Program Files image, as nothing of any consequence had occurred in that partition.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!

We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems; we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things.
