Security Certificates broken

After a disastrous BIOS update which went horribly wrong (ended with “No operating system found…”) it took about 100 posts on assorted HP forums to get it back to life. The solution was to enable Legacy Boot” in the BIOS. (I had specified Win 7 when I bought it instead of the lame Win 8, and update had reset to default, Secure Boot) All seemed well until I tried to check my Hotmail.

I tried Gmail.

So I assumed that some setting in Firefox had been changed and tried IE. Same result. I tried to log in to the Lounge, fount of all knowledge, but I got a warning that I had to reset my password. Well I jumped through that hoop and finally got in, but is this part of the security issue?

I’m sure the solution must be obvious, but not to me. Any suggestions…please!

The lounge password reset was a Penton (site owner) thing not related to your problem. Windows update may update your certificates.

Thanks to both of you. Was it just chance that Penton made the reset the password? Maybe.

Browni you hit a nail on the head, just one of the many left-overs after the BIOS debacle was the date and time, both wrong. I corrected that in Control Panel, does it have to be corrected in the BIOS as well? Does the date/time effect the certificates? If so shouldn’t correcting it resolve the issue?

Right after posting my question I saw at the bottom of a Firefox window a simple note: “Refresh Firefox…” Well it seemed reasonable that refreshing might resolve all the problems. Foolish me! To my mind “Refresh” means one thing: Wipe out and re-install a blank version of the program is something very different. I rashly assumed that although the settings would be wiped they would subsequently be restored, refreshed, old dead links removed, pristine. It is of limited comfort to see how many posts there are in Mozilla support from other people who made the same naïve decision. All I can think is that something got “lost in translation”.

So now to restore my Old Firefox!

Glad you found the problem but it was coincidence that the password reset happened at the same time as the date problem. You can read about that here.

You won’t need to do anything regarding the BIOS date/time as Windows will have updated it and can now tell that the certificates are valid as they are within their valid date/time range.

Sorry to hear about your Firefox woes, hopefully Palemoon doesn’t suffer the same fate but at least I’ll be forewarned
