Security without the wizard

I am attempting to run the Access 97 security wizard and it is unable to finish.

First, I log on as a new user who is a member of Admins.

Then I start the wizard.

The status bar says “Exporting Objects”. While the wizard is running I have noticed what look like messages flashing but the wizard keeps going. When it is about 3/4 of the way through I get an error message saying “Couldn’t Lock File.”

I click OK and get another message saying “Unable to create a copy of C:MyDBFolderMyDB.mdb.”

I click OK again and the wizard stops.

I look in C:MyDBFolder and there is a copy of MyDB.mdb named “Secure MyDB.mdb” and when opened all the objects appear to be there except for most of the tables. The tables in MyDB.mdb are mostly linked tables. Some of the ones that made it into “Secure MyDB.mdb” are linked but some aren’t.

What would cause this type of error?

I guess it would be tedious but what about securing the database and objects without the wizard?

I’ve never had much luck with the wizard, so I normally create secured databases by setting up security and then building the objects.

You could be running into a problem if the linked back end is not exclusive to this application and someone else is also linked to it, but I can’t honestly say I remember for sure, since it’s been years since I tried to use the wizard.

The alternative is to create a new database and set up security on it by giving the Admin user a password. Start by creating a copy of the System.mdw and giving it a new name that logically relates it to your database. Then join the workgroup that points at that mdw file. Set up your groups and users for the workgroup. Then import all the objects from the old database, including the table links, and use the ChangeOwner feature in the security dialog to make whatever admins user or group you wish the new owner of the objects. After that, you can assign individual groups and users to the individual objects.
