• Send File as Attachment (EXCEL XP)

    Using EXCEL XP and XP Pro SP1…have just noticed that the “Send File as Attachment” under the Send to on the File drop down box is gone (i.e. not greyed out, but gone). While I was typing this message, I decided to go check MS Word (XP version) and its gone from the Send to menu in that application. I have not added any EXCEL add-ins recently and the IT department states nothing has been updated in the last two weeks. Ran a virus scan and the machine is clean. The PC also appears void of adware at least according to adware and spybot using their respective current definitions. Does anyone know how the “Send File as Attachment” disappeared and more importantly how do I get it back? I haven’t found anything in Google groups or with MS knowledge base….Pls help! THANKS.

      In xl try

      Tools|Customize|Commands Tab. Click on Mail Recipient and drag up and drop it on Send To under File

        I did this for both EXCEL and MS WORD XP and it returns the Mail Receiptant as Attachment to the Send to options on the file menu; however, now its greyed out under both applications. Whether I take an existing EXCEL file created previously or create a new worksheet from scratch, the send to Mail Receipant as Attachment stays greyed out. Same for MS Word. Assuming the IT group didn’t change anything or apply any patches, I am at a loss as to how it disappeared to begin with and now that its been restored why its greyed out. The only way I can add an EXCEL or Word attachment is to use Outlook XP and attach the file via the menu or paper clip icon. Any additional guideance is appreciated. If it helps, I am using EXCEL XP SP3, Build 10.6501.6626

          You might try a repair installation of your default mail program (Outlook?).

            Hans,
            No change after the re-install of Outlook XP…both EXCEL and MS Word have the send to file attachment selection–but it stays greyed out. Any other ideas? THANKS

              I once had this problem in Office 97. In the end, a clean install of the entire PC was the only thing that solved it completely, but that is a rather drastic step. You may want to live with the current situation.

              Hi,
              If you open Internet Explorer, select Tools-Internet Options and then select the Programs tab, is Outlook listed as the default email program?

            • #882315

              Yes, Outlook is listed as the default e-mail program. I wish I knew how this happened….Hans is probably correct in that the only way to fix it is to re-install Office….but, while I am not happy about it, I can still go to Outlook and attach the file versus having this luxory of a one-step process from EXCEL. I have no VB macros running or add-ins…this is a vanilla install of EXCEL every time it opens…..I still wonder if its a hot patch or something that the IT dept. did.
              THANKS.

              If you open win.ini (Start-Run then type win.ini will usually start it, otherwise you can locate it in your windows directory and open it in Notepad), there should be a section headed [Mail]. It should look like this:

              [Mail]
              MAPI=1
              CMC=1
              CMCDLLNAME=mapi.dll
              CMCDLLNAME32=mapi32.dll
              MAPIX=1
              MAPIXVER=1.0.0.1
              OLEMessaging=1

              Does yours contain all those entries?

              You may also want to try this:
              Start-Run, then type ‘regsvr32 sendmail’ without the quotes.
              Hope that helps.

              Rory,
              When I do what you requested with the (regsvr32 sendmail) I get this message box:

              DllRegisterServer in sendmail succeeded…then I click ok. Not sure if this is good or bad. OK?

              Rory,
              This is all I have in the win.ini file (i.e., using the start-run):

              [WinFax]
              ExePath=C:PROGRA~1WinFax
              Fax Path=C:PROGRA~1WinFaxData
              Cover Path=C:PROGRA~1WinFaxCover

              Should I cover your lines into this file? THANKS

              Jim,
              If the registration succeeded, try restarting your PC and see if it helped. If not, then copy the additional data into win.ini, save and restart again. Note: the win.ini in theory applies to Outlook Express rather than Outlook but I figure it’s worth covering all bases at this point! If neither of those do the trick, try changing your default email program to Outlook Express, see if that works, then change it back to Outlook and see if that helps. If none of that works, I’d like to double-check a couple of registry entries if you are willing.

              Rory,
              YOU ARE THE GREATEST. When I re-started after the registration succeed, nothing changed. So I tried your next suggestion and copied your Mail statements to the win.ini file and re-booted….AND the send with attachment is no longer greyed out in either EXCEL or MS Word (i.e., and I have actually attached files and e-mailed)…..this is GREAT! Many thanks. Somehow the win.ini does impact Outlook too…at least on my XP Pro PC. Again, thanks for working this through with me!!!

              Jim,
              Glad it worked, but I’m not the greatest. Just The King! grin

            • #882358

              I’m so happy about it working again as I use the send as attachment 5-7 times daily. But the thought of a complete re-install to fix it didn’t appeal to me…so to have it back is great!!! So I nominate you as KING for the day or week or year(s). Your choice. Again, THANK YOU!
