Sending mail from different e-mail accounts (Office 2000 SR1)

Hi there,

I use two ISP’s and have for years. Seems to keep them honest when they try to blame my computer for new problems they have created. This seems to be the case presently. I run a secretarial service and have clients all over the U.S. Several have me receive all their e-mail since they are not computer literate. And they also have me send mail for them via their own e-mail account. I have always been able to just select the appropriate e-mail account to send mail from for each client. But my one ISP did an upgrade of some kind, and now when connected to their server, it will only allow me to send mail from their mail server. They of course tell me it is something I have done, but good old reliable Sprynet is not having a problem. So I am not buying their pushing this problem off on me. Any solutions or suggestions as to what has happened or how it can be fixed?

Additional information is that several ISP’s have told me that the version of MSIE that I am using has something to do with this, but that doesn’t make sense to me. Sprynet told me if I upgraded from MSIE 5.0 to 6.0, I would lose the capability to e-mail from several accounts while connected to their server. Needless to say I don’t plan to do the upgrade until I get this resolved.

Any help that anyone can give me on this would be greatly appreciated.

If you mean that the SMTP server must be the particular ISP’s SMTP server and not a third party SMTP server, that’s a common anti-spam restriction many ISPs enforce. If they are filtering on the “from” address itself, I have not seen that, but some mail server software may well do that.

That is a common practice among ISPs. They check the IP address you’re sending from and if it’s not one of their’s they block the post. It helps to stop spamming.

But it doesn’t matter what SMTP server you use. You can send email from any server that will let you. What you need to do is edit the profiles that you use for each of your clients, changing the server to what your ISP requires. That will not affect your email address or the return address.

Andrew, I am not sure what you mean by “changing my client’s profiles”. In which way are you suggesting I do that? Can you give me an example?

You said in your first post that your clients have you send mail for them via their own e-mail account. I assumed that you had a profile for each client set up in Outlook, so that you Launched Outlook with the profile of the client you were sending and receiving email for. You can have different email servers and email addresses for each profile. So in your profiles you set the SMTP server to whatever your ISP requires, and the POP server to wherever your clients have their email.

To create a profile, go to Control Panel and click on the ‘Mail’ icon and select the ‘Show Profiles’ button. This will list your profiles and give you the opportunity to create new ones. Once you have selected or created the profile, click the properties button, select ‘Internet E-mail’ and click on the properties button for that. Click on the ‘General’ tab to set your email and reply addresses and on the ‘Servers’ tab to set your POP and SMTP servers.
