I am sure that when I first set up Windows2000 that I could receive and send messages (the latter via automation of Outlook using another Office programme) without requiring Outlook to be actually running. Now I can’t do this. My mail is set up as a Service in Outlook, not an account.
At the moment when I run Norton’s Windoctor I get a consistent problem which can’t be fixed: “C:WINNTSystem32MAPISRVR.EXE cannot access the necessary file “gapi32.dll”.
This would seem to be the cause but the file gapi32.dll is
in the right folder and everything seems to be as it ought.
Anyone know what might be wrong or if there is another solution?

if using corp mode (as indicated by services menu) then you can send with outlook closed if you use a lan connection type.

alternately, fax and palm sync programs use a stub of outlook and keep it running hidden. This gives the appearance that outlook is closed but a CAD shows outlook is loaded.

do you get other errors? it could be a windoctor problem, not a dll problem.

Win Doctor gave me the error message that gapi32.dll could not be found, and Dependency Walker flagged the problem also. Dependency Walker indicated that gapi32.dll was expected to be in WINNTSystem32 so I copied it there from Program FilesCommon FilesSystemMapi1033NT. Dependency Walker finds it OK now.
