Serial Mouse (XP SR2)

I’ve a laptop, with two PS/2 pointing devices on the keyboard itself. When I am away from home, however, I prefer to use a conventional mouse, and all I have available is a serial port. I’ve got problems getting XP to recognise that there’s a serial mouse connected to that port. The mouse is OK, but it doesn’t show up under mice in device manager. Sometimes the mouse works; sometimes it doesn’t. Can anyone suggest a way forward?
