I would like some advice for installing Service Pack 3. It took me almost 2 years to upgrade to SP2, I’m hoping that it won’t take me that long this time. But, I need assurances that it will not break my computer.

Are all or most of the bugs out of SP3 or should I wait a little longer? I did a search on this topic and none were found.

    All advice will be appreciated.

I did about 35 PCs and laptops last May-June, and found no problems. Since then, I’ve done two or three more.

      But “Your Kilometerage May Vary”.

If I may be permitted to chip in on this post; I regularly run Secunia and every search indicates that all progs are updated with the latest patches. Does this imply that I have no need for SP 3 or does the fact that Woody gives it the green light imply that
(despite the Secunia report) it is prudent to go ahead and download it? Thanks again SF

If you don’t already have it installed, ( right click my computer>proprties to see if it is ) then go for it.

Thanks Bob…. Sorry if I sound hyper sensitive but you see, the problem for us dummies is that for everyone that recommends a product there is an equal number who don’t, in fact there are some who actually advise against it. I just did a search on Google for a site from which to download it and from the 29 million hits I clicked on this one : – [ http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Micro…-3/1197391546/1 ] SORRY EXPERTS, NEED HELP ON HOW TO MAKE IT INTO A LINK- WAS ABLE TO ON THE OLD LOUNGE BUT NOT THIS ONE.] Anyway, on the said site there are blogs for individuals that have encountered problems (blued out screens etc) so as the saying goes…if it aint broke, don’t fix it. Yep, it’s ok for you experts who can easy rectify things if they go wrong but for many, trepidation is the name of the game. SORRY. SF

Using that logic then, would you conclude that it’s probably best NOT to apply ANY updates, Service Packs, hotfixes, etc……. because at some point in time, SOMEBODY has encountered problems after applying these?

Unfortunately in today’s computer world “if it ain’t broke…” can get you in trouble. You could have a flaw that is not readily apparent that a ‘bad guy’ could use to install malicious software or even take over your system and that same flaw might be fixed by a service pack. It could be a patch that was never publicly released.

You can download SP-3 from Download details: Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers. NOTE: Don’t be put off by the title. It is just the full SP-3. I’ve had very good results using it instead of letting Windows Update determine the pieces to install. I also recommend that you burn the downloaded file to a CD/DVD so it is available should you ever need it again.

I am guilty of not updating SP3 because I didn’t want to deal with Windows Update service. I like the idea of having a full copy available. It will save time to have everything on hand for install during reformats. Thanks for the link!

You should consider slipstreaming SP3. See Paul Thurrott’s SuperSite for Windows: Slipstreaming Windows XP with Service Pack 3 (SP3) for details.

I suppose I ought to. Thanks for the link. Do you suppose I could follow directions?

It’s not too hard. You can just type (or paste) a URL in and that will give a clickable usable link, though it won’t look like one. The better way is to click on the insert link button at the top of the message. Up pops a box in which you can type or paste the URL. When you click OK up pops a second box. You can then enter a title for the link. If you want it to say something like “My website” you type that. If you want it to actually show the URL itself, you just enter it again in this box too.

              Hope that helps!

Thanks Ian….slowly getting the hang of the new lounge which must have taken many hours & great skill to construct, (for which fellers like me are grateful) but whilst it could well prove to be easy to navigate in the long run, it is a pity some of the previous features [tabs] like [posts in the past 1hr….2 hrs…3 hrs etc. were not carried over into the new lounge as they were so easy to use. Yes, there are some good convenient tabs like those to the left of this box but searching for previous articles and members is not as easy as before [at least that’s what I think so far] opinion may change as time goes by. Hi Duchess, like yourself I was not keen on installing XP-SP3 finally after several “Error Messages” from Microsoft I relented on 14 February 2009, there is a post under “Malicious software removal tool” in the forum “General Windows Solutions” I cannot find the post number on the new software. I have been amazed at the increase in speed. No adverse effects. From what I can find the post was number 759059 but as previously stated can’t find this information on the new forum software. It is there I think with a post number 759055

I think that you will find that it is the same service pack as when it was released (no bugs are jumping out of that file). MSFT has released a lot of documentation related to SP3. A start for the interested could be to take a look at the white paper that summarizes what is new in XP SP3 (available in for example a PDF-file). Download details: Windows XP Service Pack 3 Overview.

If you do a search for your topic “Service Pack 3″ in the appropriate sub-forum here (we are at General Windows Solutions at the moment) (Windows XP) you will find that it has been discussed many times before. Anyhow, I add some links to some of the documentaion over at MSFT.

      What Is Service Pack 3?

Thank you Argus. I have read all of the articles you have listed. From what I’ve read all or most all of the fixes provided by SP3 would not help me as an individual. The fixes apply mostly to things I don’t use and never heard of.

To apply SP3 and take a chance on something going wrong is not worth the headache I might encounter.

Thanks for the articles, it helped me make up my mind.

          Gloria,
To say that SP3 includes things that you don’t use or never heard of, is saying and assuming a LOT!

Do you really mean that you understand ALL of the bits and pieces of Windows? There are a lot of security fixes and improvements in SP3, so you SHOULD go for it. I DO however, remember the hassle we went through in convincing you to install SP2, so do your thing but you SHOULD update to SP3.

( it seems to me that you had a copy of True Image, so if you make an image before you update, you can always revert back with TI, if there were some unseen problem )

Have you ever heard about computer users who know a lot about nothing, well that’s me. You won’t have to work so hard this time, I’ll take the bull by the horns and install it just as soon as I work up just a little bit more courage.

      HI,
I have been trying to install sp3 on my Acer laptop since October last year, and again just now (suggested after a rare blue screen error). Each time the install hung and I had to back out.

I am grateful for XP recovery capabilities, but no idea why it will not complete its install. There are no error messages.

I have XP Professional with Zonealarm and AVG installed (I disabled them). not sure if these can impact it.

No problems installing on my desktop with similar software and XP Home.

So, yes, there are issues with XP sp3.
