• Set firewall to allow FTP download?

Ah, another example of nanny behavior by Vista — the firewall appears to be preventing my programs that use the FTP protocol form downloading files from my own Web site. WS/FTP fails downloads or indicates that access is denied, and JAlbum freezes.

The first time I used JAlbum’s publishing function to upload a photo album to my site, I did get a message asking whether I wanted to allow downloads — but I figured that I only wanted to upload, so I clicken “no”. Apparently I was wrong in doing this because the program has to download files too to compare them with the ones it is uploading. Subsequent uploads do not bring on the message asking whether to allow downloads, but only get partway through and then the application freezes so I have to close it using the task manager.

I looked at the firewall settings in the Control Panel, and tried to add my own site to the list of trusted sites. I got the message that the downloading pages had to use the https: protocol. The pages and files (images, PDFS etc.) I would like to download don’t use it.

So, how do I get around this?

Methinks you are trying to allow the wrong thing. What you want to try is to add the “JAlbum” .exe file to the exclusions in the firewall. This you would find in the program’s installation folder.

Another thing you should look into is if this program is compatible with Vista. See if there is an update on the author’s website and look to see what operating systems it is compatible with.

Bingo — thanks. Both JAlbum and WS/FTP Pro were in the list of programs in the Exceptions tab, but neither was checked.

So far, I have had no other problems with these programs. There is a 64-bit version of JAlbum but it requires 64-bit Java. I am using 32-bit Mozilla Firefox, which requires 32-bit plug-ins (many not available as 64-bit). I’m not sure that I can have both 32-bit and 64-bit Java resident under Vista, and I don’t want to try this until I have confirmation that it will work.
