I’m confused on how a guest SSID works. Reading the manual tells me that when I go into the router’s configuration and enable the guest SSID, anyone connecting to that SSID cannot access anything on my LAN. They can just access the Internet. Great! Doesn’t work. Guests can still access my server. Can someone please explain to me what I’m doing wrong?
This is actually for my church. I’m the Accidental IT Department.
Our ISP connects to us with a cable modem. The modem connects to a Linksys RV016 firewall. This firewall device connects to a Linksys EtherFast 3124 switch. We also have a number of computers, printers, and a Windows Server connected to the switch. The server does DHCP. We also have four ASUS RT-AC66U_B1 Wi-Fi access points. They are configured in “Access Point (AP) mode.” On these AP’s I’ve setup the staff SSID’s for in-house use. Staff laptops can connect to the server and printers without any problem.
These ASUS AP’s have a Guest Network option which states that “the Guest Network provides Internet connection for guests but restricts access to your network.” Great! On each I’ve setup guest SSID’s.
Now, someone connecting to this guest SSID should not be able to access anything on our LAN, correct?
Wrong! When I use a non-church laptop and connect to the staff SSID, I can access the server and printers. When instead I connect the laptop to the guest SSID, I can still connect to the server and printers. Why? I’m so confused!
