I ran the command sfc /scannow in Win 10 TP build 9860. Some errors were found which could not be fixed. If I send the scan details is it possible for anyone to tell me whether the unfixed items really matter, and, if they do, to suggest a way to fix the errors?

    Advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks and regards, Roy

On Google I’ve seen a others reporting unable to fix after running a sfc whereas others have had no problems or a sfc has fixed – mainly problems with IE.

Check for any new WUs, but I would have thought putting the errors into Feedback or contacting MS may have better results.

You could try running the sfc in Safe Mode should it be because of a 3rd party AV conflicting.

Sudo15, I want to start Win 10 in Safe Mode with the various options (With Command Prompt, Networking, etc.) but have forgotten how to do so.

I would appreciate you reminding me.

Sudo15, thanks but before seeing your reply I remembered that when booting to any of my 3 operating systems, when I choose which one to boot , all I have to do is press F8.

I had to use the Refresh option in the Win 10 Tech Preview, and now have a different problem with the sfc /scannow command. I get the message “Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service”.

      Advice would be appreciated.

    • #1472632

Sometimes an AV program can be responsible for this error – can you try the command in Safe Mode ?

      • #1472699

Sudo15, I tried the command in safe mode but it made no difference. Any other ideas?

        • #1472703

This problem can be attributed to the Windows Module Installer service not starting or being set as Disabled.

It should be set as Manual and can be manually started by clicking on it and then on Start in the top left pane, but just changing it back to Manual if showing as Disabled can resolve.

Sometimes right clicking on it, selecting Properties and using the dropdown to change it to Disabled if it is already set to Manual – OK – reboot then go back in and change it back to Manual and manually start it.

If it fails to start and you are getting the sfc error in Win 10 then I would suggest reinstalling it.

With Win 7 you could try an offboot sfc /scannow after booting up with an install disk but that doesn’t always resolve the sfc fail to start error http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/139810-sfc-scannow-run-command-prompt-boot.html

              The Win 10 Beta.

Sudo15, FWIW I booted in safe mode with command prompt and then ran the command DISKPART followed by the command LISTDISK. The problem that arose then was that the Win 10 system is on the second of three partitions on one of my disks, but the 3 were listed as one.

I have other problems with Win 10, for example if I try to open “Turn Windows Features On Or Off” the page that opens is blank, so I can do nothing about the Windows Modules Installer.

I also tried booting from the Tech Preview DVD. I used the repair option, but was told my PC could not be repaired.

Unless you have any other ideas I will reinstall Win 10.

    • #1472784

The Windows Module Installer is a Service and is located in services.msc.

The blank features option could be because of the Beta nature of the OS, but there must be something wrong with the install if the sfc is failing and perhaps the reinstall is the best way to go.

I’ve never done any multi boots so can’t help you with that although I know that it’s best installed in a Virtual Machine from the Win 8.0 trial days http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-install-windows-10-technical-preview-as-a-virtual-machine/ and I assume you created a full system image before installing Win 10 TP ?

    • #1472790

      Roy,
This link, http://www.howtogeek.com/193669/whats-the-difference-between-gpt-and-mbr-when-partitioning-a-drive/, posted by F.U.N. downtown, may explain why the 3 os’s show as 1 partition. Scroll down to compatability paragraph but you will probably want to read the whole article.
      Hope this helps.
I haven’t tried a sfc scan as my install is having no problems as a dual boot but the partition is MBR.

Run this is an elevated command prompt: Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
      Then run sfc /scannow.
      All errors should be fixed.

    • #1474194

I had already run the Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command in an elevated command prompt, and it completed successfully, but the sfc /scannow command listed the same errors as before.

    • #1474857

Drew, thanks but the link didn’t help.

I ran chkdsk with the repair option 3 times on the Win 10 drive, and no problems were found, but sfc /scannow still finds errors, all of which seem to refer to failures to decompress various system files, even after running the Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command, which was said to succeed.

    • #1474864

Why not just scrap it and start again – it could have been a bad install.

    • #1474877

Sudo, I’ve tried Refresh and have reinstalled 3 times and have no wish to do so again, as the problem remains and it takes too long to reinstall all my programs. What I would really like is for someone to look at the scan details and tell me whether or not the errors mentioned are anything to worry about.

    • #1474882

So what does the DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth report ?

Did the system still have errors before you installed all of your programs and are you installing Win 10 in VM or directly onto your computer ?

    • #1474929

Sudo, the DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth command just said success, but when I ran the sfc /scannow command immediately after that it reported errors, as mentioned previously.

I installed Win 10 directly on my PC.

Drew, I have tried Refresh and reinstalling at least 3 times, and reinstalling all my programs takes a long time, and didn’t solve the scan errors, but I will think about reinstalling again.

      Regards, Roy

    • #1474939

Would you believe it! While in Win 10 I inserted my Win 10 DVD, and when autoplay came up selected run setup.exe, but setup wouldn’t start. I tried several times. What can I do about it?

    • #1475027

I’m hoping that you created a full system image before installing Win 10 – which I think you should use to restore your computer back to the way it was and then you can start again, but this time install Win 10 TP in VM as it isn’t advisable to put a beta directly onto your computer. http://www.techrepublic.com/article/pro-tip-how-to-install-windows-10-technical-preview-in-virtualbox/

If you are able to do this, run the sfc /scannow before adding any programs.

    • #1475235

Sudo, I’m trying to set up Virtual Box, but all the alternative Operating systems it refers to are 32 bit, whereas my OS is 64 bit. I attach a screenshot showing the Virtual Box window I currently have open, and would appreciate your guidance. (Incidentally, the link in the Tech Republic article to the Virtual Box download page doesn’t work).

    • #1475238

Apart from my previous question, I want to install the VM in place of my current Win 10 installation. Will I be able to format the Win 10 disk, then recreate the unallocated space as a Simple Volume, and install the VM in that volume?

      Please advise.

      Thanks and regards, Roy

So are you using a separate HDD for the Win 10 install ?

Does the dropdown not give you different versions of Windows ?

I’ll have to leave your main question to the hardware experienced guys but as far as the VM is concerned, I’d follow Drew’s advice – had forgotten about Hyper-V.

    • #1475264

Sudo, I intended to use the HDD that Win 10 is currently installed on, but didn’t get beyond the Window shown in the screenshot in Virtual Box.

The dropdown listed different versions of Windows, but all were 32 bit.

Drew, while in Win 7 I downloaded Microsoft VPC, but when I ran it I was told I needed to download KB958559 from Windows Update. That was downloaded and installed, and I was required to restart. I found then that the previous KB version in the name of the VPC had been changed to KB958559. Just to complete a few days of problem reinstalls of Win 10, when I ran the VPC installer I was told “the update is not applicable to your computer” and the installer shut down.

I will now try to download and install Hyper-V, and if that doesn’t work I’ll feel like giving up on the preview and waiting until the finished version is released.

    • #1475265

As you have Win 10 on its own HDD then you won’t need to use a VM – that’s just a safeguard to protect C: and your original OS.

See if any of these will run in your existing Win 10 install http://www.free-codecs.com/Microsoft_Fix_It_download.htm

    • #1475273

Sudo, I ran the Codec Crashes Fixit but the green progress bar went to and fro with no sign of ever finishing, so I closed it down. In any case, what difference would any of the Fixits you referred to make to my problems with Win 10?

FWIW, I tried to run the Hyper-V installer, and was told to uninstall KB958830, which I did, and then a Help page opened with an explanation of how to install Windows Remote Admin Tools. (That name may not be completely correct). I gave up reading that when I saw your last post.

In view of all the time I have wasted on Win 10, I feel now like downloading and installing the latest Preview Build, and putting up with the problems I’ve encountered until Microsoft start releasing ISO versions of the Preview Builds, which I understand they now intend to do at some point.

    • #1475324

As you said the .exe wouldn’t start, it could have been a WMP edition or the CD fixits that could have resolved that for you.

Downloading the latest build may fix what you have been experiencing – at least it should address problems that others may have had, but bear in mind the fixits if that .exe doesn’t start either.

    • #1475433

Sudo, I downloaded the latest build but it wouldn’t install-Error Code 0x80240016, whatever that may mean.

Drew, I added Hyper-V in Windows Features, but how do I use it?

My CPU details are shown in my signature-do you happen to know if it supports Hyper-V?

      Please advise.

      Thanks and regards, Roy

    • #1475435

Sudo, I looked up the error code and as a result ran the command net stop wuauserv, but was told the Windows Update Service could not be stopped.

    • #1475448

I tried again to install the latest Preview Build, and this time got error code 0x80070652. I looked that up and got a list of results, but every time I clicked one of the links IE failed to respond.

    • #1475462

Drew, I tried to connect Hyper-V to my computer, but got the message shown on the attached screenshot. How do I correct this?

    • #1475463

Drew, I just opened Programs and Features and tried to install Hyper-V (which I thought was installed) but was told “Hyper-V cannot be installed.Virtualisation support is disabled in the firmware”. I assume “firmware”refers to the BIOS, but I saw no reference in the BIOS to Virtualisation support.

      Please advise further.

    • #1475465

Drew, in Windows 7 I opened Windows Virtual PC and there were 2 .iso files listed under Integration Components, namely Integration Components.iso and Precompact.iso. Is it worth making a DVD from Integration Components.iso and would I then be able to install a Virtual PC from that DVD and install Win 10 on that? Also, can I ignore the Precompact.iso file?

      Sorry about all the questions.

      Please advise.

    • #1475466

Have a look at this article to see if your computer supports Hyper-V http://techpageone.dell.com/technology/windows-8-1-computer-support-hyper-v/ and the info in this article may help if it does http://stackoverflow.com/questions/22939147/cant-install-hyper-v-on-windows-8-1

Those error codes you were getting – a reboot could resolve those as one relates to an install already in progress which could relate to an update and the second one was similar as far as I could understand with an update going through the process of installing.

    • #1475562

I formatted the Win 10 disk, then created a new partition on that disk, and I am now using Disk Management to create a VHD on the new partition. However, please see the attached screenshot-the OK button is greyed out and I don’t know why. What have I done wrong?

    • #1476413

I finally gave up on other methods and went back to square one, namely I formatted the Win 10 drive, created a new partition in the unallocated space, and then installed the first build in that partition. I then updated to the second and then third build , and now have build 9879. There were some problems along the way, but I managed to overcome them.(Having said that, sfc /scannow still shows some errors, almost all relating to an inability to decompress some Macrovision files, but I hope the next Win 10 build will sort this out).

File Hippo can’t open IE 11, but IE 11 is ok otherwise.

One strange thing. My keyboard doesn’t light up in Win 10, so I don’t know, except by typing something to find out, whether or not Caps Lock is on. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Apart from the above, I understand that Microsoft have changed their mind and now intend to update Win 10 soon to eliminate at least some of the bugs in build 9879, and I look forward to the update arriving.

      From the Insider Hub app

This will be the last new build of the year for Windows Insiders. We’ll be using the time over the holidays to continue making refinements both to the product and to our engineering system. That doesn’t mean we won’t have Insider Hub updates though—new missions, announcements, and other news will continue to roll in over the next few weeks, so keep the feedback coming! In early 2015, we’ll have another preview build for you to play with.

As with the last preview build, you’re getting code hot-off-the-presses which means there are a few problems. For the first two, we’ll be publishing fixes to WU updates shortly, but the remainder will not be fixed for 9879.

•In some cases you may get a black screen when trying to log-in or unlock. The only option is to hold the power button to hard reboot.
•You will be unable to connect to Distributed File System network locations.
•Some systems may see disk growth of 20GB+ due to driver install duplication. On systems with low disk space this can block setup and cause a rollback to the previous build.
•Skype calls will disconnect and Music will stop playing if apps are minimized.
•There are several known issues with screen sharing with Lync.
