ShadowProtect 3.2 has just been released (April 25) and is available for download (trial version and upgrade for registered customers). The 3.2 Recovery Environment (i.e. the ISO for the creation of the bootable recovery disk) will be released next week.

Since you have a wee bit more experience with this product than I do, John, can you tell me if you installed it yet, please? The reason I ask is that the link for the download says:

“You can download the latest Server Edition from the following link:”

Is the update code the right stuff for the Desktop Edition? By virtue of the downloaded filename, I think so, but wanted to ask you anyway. (SPDesktop_Setup_3_2.exe)

        Al,
I haven’t downloaded or installed it yet. I’ll wait until the ISO file is available next week. But in answer to your question, the link provided IS for the Desktop 3.2 version. You can confirm this by going to the SP Desktop page and clicking on the 30 Day free Trial link.

Thanks John. If you see the ISO file available before I do, please post, for I too am going to wait for a few days. I have a secondary reason for pausing. I posted a question on their forum to this extent. I am running SP incrementals nightly and if I upgrade to a new version in mid-cycle, will that break the chain and cause my job to fail, or whatever. So far I’ve gotten no answers.

Will do Al. BTW, I saw your question on the SP forum and I responded with my thoughts. Hopefully someone from SP can give us a definite answer to that question.

Another responder says it blew away his jobs, so we’ll have to see. It’s not a big deal since I only have the one running. I can easily create a new one anytime. But if I lose it now for instance, I’d have to start the nightlies with a new full image.

Well, patience NOT being one of my virtues ( evilgrin ) I went ahead and ran the Version 3.2 update file that I downloaded, figuring what the heck, I can easily re-create my backup jobs.

It DID NOT blow away my scheduled job, installed without a hitch and even all my backup history logs are still in place. It WAS a little strange that the installer said it was installing Version 3.02.4210 but when I look at the About screen after a requested reboot, it says I’m now at Version 3.2.0.2 so I don’t know what that grammatical difference means.

My overnight job for an incremental is still scheduled, so I’ll have to see in the morning if it runs as planned. I will make a post like this one on their forum just to keep the loop closed.

Almost forgot to post this. My overnight incremental backup ran just fine. So, it seems that 3.2 CAN be installed without removing 3.1 first, at least if my experience is the norm.

Great! Thanks for the info Al. thumbup

Since neither one of us put a link here for it and I don’t think it’s a “secret” let me add one more post about the ISO file.

For newbies to the ShadowProtect web pages: They don’t make it easy to find the URL for downloading the ISO file which you need to burn your recovery CD if you buy the product via download. However, I found it in one of two ways. You must be a registered user in order to get to the file. If you login to YOUR customer account and go to your order page, there should be a link there that will take you to the ISO download page.

However, I found a post in their forums that provided this link: StorageCraft. You must enter your product serial number to start the process.

Possibly important caveat: When you buy ShadowProtect they “allow” you 5 downloads of the software and 5 downloads of the separate ISO file. I accidently found out just now that if you go to the ISO download page and it attempts to start the automatic download process, your download COUNTER ticks off as if you’ve actually made another download! Whew, be careful. I just accidently threw away one of my 5 download authorizations.

        Hi Al,

When I bought SP early March, I added the one year maintenance plan for $16. It was my understanding that the “plan” provides for all updates during this period, including any major upgrades (like a version 4) and unlimited downloads.

Now you have me wondering since my invoice does indicate the “5 downloads” of both software and ISO files on a separate area of the invoice. I’ll post a note on the forum to get clarification of what the maintenance plan actually includes.

        Cheers, Bob

And I entered a “support ticket” telling them about my “accident” while testing the link for a post in Woody’s. I asked them to reinstate my download count, since I did not pay the $16 for maintenance. We’ll have to compare notes.

I did exactly the same thing Al (lost one of my downloads). I hadn’t thought about submitting a support ticket but I’ll do that as well. Thanks for that tip.
