    A folder sharing question

If I setup 2 external USB drives that are identical both volume label and folders.
I next setup two folders for public sharing.
These drives are for off site rotation of backups.

If I remove the 1st drive through windows and replace it with the second drive
are the 2 folders still shared or will the sharing have to be setup again?

I would like to know if this will be a problem before I suggest it as a solution.

What happened when you tried the above? I’m interested!

I have not tried it yet, need to get a couple of drives first.

Testing gave me some unexpected results.
Two external drives call them xxx & yyy.
created two folders on xxx and named them TEST01 & TEST02
I shared the two folders for everyone wth read/write access.
Went to second PC and coppied some files to both folders, everything is ok.

Asked windows to remove/eject drive xxx and inserted drive YYY
created two folders on YYY and named them TEST01 & TEST02
I shared the two folders for everyone wth read/write access.
Went to second PC and now the shares for first PC list the following.
          The shares are: Test01, Test02, Test012 & Test022

It seems that Windows keeps the share names and if you try to share folders on diffetent
drives that have the same names Windows will change the share name.

If the drives show in Windows as the same drive letter then the shares should return without you having to re-create them.
Delete the shares you set up.
Plug the drives in one at a time and make them the same drive letter.
Turn off indexing of the drives – don’t want to confuse Windows.
Create 2 shares on one drive. Test.
Swap drives and check if the shares are still available. If not, re-start the “server” service from “services.msc”.

      cheers, Paul

      Paul
You are correct and thanks for helping.
I now have the process that I’m going to use.
