shortcut key for macro

I have created a macro that will be used frequently with a template. Is there a way to give the shortcut key to a PPT 2000 macro like you can in Word or Excel?

The reason I’m creating a macro is the customer wants to be able to have two different backgrounds within a presentation. Can’t use template or Slide master to do this. Documentation says to hyperlink to a different presentation.

My idea was to have a macro copy the secondary background and use it on a new slide – all I have to do is send it to the background and it seems to work. I don’t want to have to go to Tools/Macro each time to activate.

Hi Sherri,

There doesn’t appear to be any direct way to assign a macro to a shortcut key in PowerPoint 2000, but here’s a workaround that’s just about as good:

Assign your macro to a new toolbar item. You’ll need to specify Text Only. For the text(Name) you could for instance merely use “&m”.

Now when your users use the key combination Alt+M, it will run the macro.

If you need more detail on getting the macro onto a toolbar item, let me know.

THANKS – I had thought about making it a toolbar item, but can I somehow put it in my template so that the toolbar appears for everyone who opens the template? Like, maybe an autoexec macro?

Hi Sherri,

I haven’t really done any PowerPoint templates, but my understanding was that if you make customizations (toolbar items, macros etc.) into a PowerPoint file, and save it with a .pot extension into your Templates folder (location may differ depending on which OS and which version of Office), then whenever you create a new presentation based on the template, all of the customizations should be available in the new presentation.

Maybe I’m missing something but I do this all the time w/o a macro. ALtho I work in ppt 97, I believe what I’m about to say is in ppt 2K.

2 approaches that are really almost the same.
If you have a template, then what’s on the template shows as background for all slides by default – granted.

1. I draw a box around the whole slide and fill it as white (or some other color) with no line. Hides the template material and I can now do whatever I want for that slide.

2. For the slide that I don’t want the template material, do the following:
– right click a blank part of the slide and choose background (also get to from the Format menu). you’re now looking at a dialogue for background fill
– click the drop-down and choose fill effects
– click on the picture tab
– click select picture and browse to the file you want and click OK when you find what you want.
– click OK until you get back to the Background dialogue box
– make sure you check the omit background graphics from master at the bottom. Most important
– click on Apply (not Apply All) and you’re done

Thanks – I need to get the background in a picture format so I can make it a background. Then I think this should work.
