• Shortcuts: correct icons not loading

For no apparent reason, about 80% of my shortcut icon images are not loading in desktop folders. I get only the MS Logo as an image. Tried the Change Icon routine (the correct image is still pointed to) and applied them but they later revert back to the MS Logo image. Any suggestions on how I might get back the correct/installed icon images? Thanks much for any assistance….Running Win2000/SP4

You might have a corrupt cache file. Try deleting your iconcache file. Or use TweakUI to rebuild your icon cache.

I give up, where is my icon cache file so I can delete it…it appears TweakUI is a WinXP program and wouldn’t run on Win2000. Also, any other software that will rebuild the icon cache as I might have it…however, I’ll give deleting the cache file a try as I have my HD cloned on a second HD so I guess I could always replace it if deleting it fails (or I can try overwriting the icon cache copy from the second HD (if I can find the cache file!)…thanks for the prompt response….

The delete Icon Cache/Reboot routine is not working…still many shortcuts which display only MS Logo icons (funny, all the Control Panel shortcuts display correct icons). Maybe problem related to new error window (Proxy Desktop: Explorer.exe-Application Error) which gives following message: instructions at (address) referred memory at (address). The memory could not read. This is followed by another window: runtime error 216 at (address).

If I can’t get a fix for this it looks as if I will have to copy my backup drive which, of course, means I’ll have to re-install all the Office2003 SP1 updates and several other programs (hopefully I can remember which ones) which I installed over the past week…hopefully someone has another idea..Thanks to all for the prompt responses……

I have found a couple of knowledge base articles relating to runtime error 216

MSKB 259279 – This is caused by the SubSeven Trojan
MSKB 189989 – This relates to a mouse driver for Oakley Smartwheel

Both of these articles refer to WIndows 95 & 98 but due to the first article it will be best to run an anti-virus scan.

Still no luck to fixing the partial improper display of shortcut icons…ran a virus scan (EWIDO) and a couple registery repair programs (Registry First Aid, NSW, etc.) with no luck. Seems to me the fact that all the Control Panel icons display correctly but the problem is in folders on the DeskTop might indicate the source of the problem. Anyhow, I live with the MS logo icon but it is pretty ugly….Any other ideas would be appreciated…..Thanks again….
