I remember that there were a lot of problems with WIN 7 SP1 when it came out, and the general advice was not to install it yet. I have SP1 listed by Windows Update as an “important” update. Should I install it yet or keep ignoring that little window that pops up when I turn on my PC?

I’ve had it installed since it first came out with little ill effect. A good practice would be to create a drive image just prior to
the installation in the event it does not go so well for you. Everyones software environment is different, and it will be difficult
to tell who will have trouble and who won’t. Other preparatory steps may include temporarily disabling any full AV suite or firewall.

Either way you decide, make sure your computer is in order and functioning without issue and the install will likely be problem free.
If you are still unsure then hold off, find a full offline download link, and keep it for the next time you do a full clean install.

I would run the readiness too to be sure but have had no problems with its install across about 200 machines. Remember to have a restore point and backup just in case
