Shutdown issues WindowsXP

I have an old Compac that has been designated the grand-kids computer.. All of a sudden the shutdown sequence leaves the processor running.. occasionally, perhaps once every 3~4 times. The monitor has gone, and there is no HD activity, the only obvious things running are the fan(s?) and the power (green) light. I have no input that I am aware of and my only option seems to be a manual push / hold the on switch until the system shuts off.

WindowsXP SP3

Anyone with any thoughts?

Usually when XP hangs on shutdown it is waiting to hear from a networking process. See if Advanced troubleshooting for shutdown problems in Windows XP, Troubleshooting Windows XP Shutdown Issues, or Troubleshooting Windows XP Shutdown Problems. From device manager I noticed a redundant Network Adapter which may have been the problem. I will keep an eye on it and see if the problem has been fixed.
