Installed the release preview on a dual boot machine. Everything seems fine. A lot faster and smoother than the CP running from a VM (probably due to running on an SSD!). Some things seem a little easier to get done than before.

However, I have a strange problem when I attempt to shutdown.

The box has a multi media adapter unit connected via an internal USB header. This gives a USB port, a CF, an SD a MMC and a couple of other media ports on the front panel. These appear as mapped drives in Windows Explorer exactly the same as Win7. When I shutdown, I get an exception message that there is no disk in Drive F, then Drive G, then Drive H etc. Options are Retry, Ignore and Continue. Retry and Ignore just cycle back to the same message. Continue skips onto the next “missing” disk until I get to the final “disk” whereupon hitting Continue causes shutdown to be initiated.

The install was clean with no errors. The ISO checksum was validated and the DVD verified after burning. The event logs show no underlying errors……Can’t see it being an installation issue.

Any thoughts?

I had the same problem. Solved it by unchecking Fast start on the ‘change power button” page in Power Options. You must select “change options not available’ before you can change it. Also selected enable Hibernation while I was there.

How peculiar that fast start should have an issue shutting down with a media extender card mapping to drives. If it’s not resolved in the RTM, I think there will be a few people scratching their heads as these types of extenders are very prevalent on desktop PC’s. Didn’t see if the same problem was present on the CP because I ran under a VM on a different machine.

To add insult–disabling Fast Start makes it start much faster–32 seconds! You can also make a Shutdown button shortcut and add it to the Start page. Here’s the command:

Shutdown.exe -s -t 00 I used that until I found Fast Start fix. There’s even an icon that matches a shutdown button

I would assume this Fast Start option is only available if Hibernation is enabled. I disabled Hibernation (I always do as I never use hibernation and wish to save the hiberfil.sys file space) and do not see this option at all.

Fast Start is a hybrid between system shutdown and hibernate. The kernel is hibernated while the apps are shut down. This can produce some peculiar effects with USB or virtual-USB devices or drives. When being treated as external devices, they must be shut down, hence the messages which need to be dismissed one by one. When treated as System Devices (internal hardware) they should hibernate without incident, as the kernel is not shut down. How Windows 8 determines the difference between external and internal USB devices, I do not know.

The hiberfile in this arrangement is much smaller than the traditional Windows Hiberfile, as it only needs to hibernate the system kernel, not all the apps.

I hope I’ve helped clarify the issue in this post, instead of making it murkier. I am not a hardware technician, so I do the best job I can as a lay person when explaining these things.

Thanks Bob, that’s very illuminating. I don’t have hibernation enabled on the test machine because it’s running dual boot on an SSD, but from that description, there may be less problems with hibernation and wear out of an SSD in Windows 8.

Back to Fast Start and the disk not found error message on shutdown. Here’s an odd thing: this morning I booted up Windows 8 RP to capture some screen grabs of the disk on found problem so I could post them here for clarity of this issue. I set Fast Start back to its default settings (ticked the box) and attempted to shutdown to capture the error messages but they never appeared. Checked a couple of times with and without Fast Start and the problem appears to have gone away

I can now shutdown cleanly even with Fast Start enabled and with no annoying “disk not found” errors.

Something quirky going on there.

Maybe just a glitch in the CP version. All of this Win 8 stuff is still beta, you know, and still evolving.

A bit worrying though, since from reports, RTM is in a little over 5 weeks.

No sign of the error now here, but precisely the same error has been reported on at least one other forum with no success.

I’m tempted to refresh the machine or even to re-install just so I can attempt to recreate it.

My Win 8 RP installation has the traditional Hibernate option enabled (using the Win 8 Control Panel). On my Toshiba Satellite laptop with a dual-boot, this works just fine for me, and it is very fast, even compared with the Win 7 Hibernate recovery. (All is 64-bit.)
