My wife’s Lenovo T440s is an awesome machine, but when it comes to Skype, it is a major problem. The audio works perfectly, but there is no way that I can get the webcam to work.

I have also installed Lync, and this has the same problem. Somehow the programmes are not being allowed to access the webcam. Can someone assist please? TIA

Have you checked the skype settings to see what’s all set as default? Does the webcam work under lenovo’s default webcam software? Has the webcam ever worked?

Thanks for the reply… yes – I have checked the webcam does work with the Lenovo webcam software… and it is enabled under the Skype settings…. I just get a grey block, with a camera logo and a line through it any time I try to use it with Skype (or Lync)!

This worked for a client when nothing else did:

Is the problem isolated to Lenovo laptops? I have the same problem with my X240…. and windows 8.1 with Skype….

Skype works flawlessly with my Samsung Book 8 Laptop and iPad / iPhone….

Sounds like the webcam drivers are missing or wrong or not for that OS version. My webcam simply worked when I plugged it in.

However, getting the Logitech software in to manage it and use other features was another matter. When I installed it, it appeared to work. But the camera stopped working and there was no menu items. I had to manually uninstall it, then the webcam worked again, but without the features.

The Logitech forums didn’t help but support finally sent instructions – basically to install with all services, startup and AV turned off. Then turn them back on again. That worked.

So my point – if you’ve installed software for the webcam, that might be the problem. See if it works without.

I have had this problem w Lenovo laptops in the past. Somehow, the camera gets turned off. You might want to try:

Somehow you are turning the camera off.

Follow these steps to turn the camera back on…
      – Start -> All Programs -> Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools
      – Click on -> Web Conferencing -or- Communications Utility
      – You should see your picture. If you do not click on Show my video image right below the square with the Camera with the slash over it.
      – Click Close to save your settings.

You may have the special key with the Camera picture on it (f5)

Good luck and let us know if it works now.

There are 2 versions of Skype that are compatible with Windows 8.x – the default “universal” app, which I’ve found often does not detect audio or cameras even when Windows itself does. The only solution I’ve found is to download Skype for Desktop, which works perfectly under Windows 8 also.
