sleep mode doesn't work

this is win7, 64 bit, on dual boot with xp.

start>sleep causes complete shut down. i have gone into power settings and the power button is set to initiate sleep. however i am using start>sleep.

when i restart i get the screen telling me the system crashed and do i want to start normally, safe mode, etc.

i have updated the dell monitor driver, and nvidia video board driver (which i rolled back, since it made things worse. would boot to secondary of the 2 monitor system, or else, at odd moments simply shut off the primary monitor and switch to the 2nd monitor. i rebooted 4 times, and then gave up and rolled back to previous driver.)

any ideas about fixing the sleep issue?

thanks for reply Peter. I just checked bios in this dell dimension, E521, i don’t see any settings for controlling what sleep/hibernate does, or what buttons control it.

I have also checked the win7 power options and if there is a setting there that can fix it, i haven’t seen it. i have found the settings for controlling what the power button does.

btw: standby works ok when booted in XP.

jerry, that is the key. S1 and S3. i didn’t realize that they referred to sleep mode. it says in the bios that S1 resumes more quickly; S3 conserves more power. S3 is the factory setting. and, wanting to conserve power, i had left it there.

with S3 set, hibernate is not offered in the shut down menu. and sleep shuts down the computer, as i mentioned above.

with S1 set, sleep AND hibernate are offered. sleeps works like standby, hitting keyboard or mouse revives the system. hibernate now works like shut down (or, as sleep did with S3).

i suppose that it would be nice to have hibernate work they way it is supposed to, but don’t want to spend a lot of time on it. if it is just a matter of changing another setting or two i’ll try it. however, S1 sleep/standby is what i am used to using. if i can’t get hibernate to work properly, i would just as soon try to remove it from the list.

the problem isn’t as solved as i had thought. while win7 now sort of works (as long as one doesn’t hit hibernate instead of sleep), standby in winxp no longer works as it did. standby in winxp now works more like a screen saver. screen goes dark, but something in computer is still running. h.d.? fan?

so, any more ideas on how to get win7 AND winxp to work as they should?

For Windows 7, how is hibernate acting?

What about its behavior is contrary to what hibernate is supposed to do?

joep, as i mentioned in post of 10/22, hibernate shuts down the computer. when computer restarts i get the “enter safe mode? start normally?” screen. this is not what hibernate is supposed to do.

i looked at the powercfg report. interesting stuff, it complained about 11 different usb devices. i don’t know where to start in trying figure it out. it is hard to believe that 11 devices are causing a problem. i am guessing that it is something else that is the problem, though i don’t know what it would be.

standby in xp was working fine until trying to get win7 to go into sleep mode, xp standby now does not function correctly. screen blanks but computer still has fan? h.d.? running. it used to be silent. same as what win7 sleep mode now does.

curiously, i updated the invidia video adapter, turned off hybrid power setting, and have switched bios power setting back to S3, i now have, in win7, sleep mode working properly, and hibernate still improperly shutting down the system. and xp continues to not work properly. as far as i can tell bios settings are back to where they started, and win7 device drivers should not affect xp, but something while trying to get win7 sleep/hibernate to work properly is apparently affecting xp.

I seem to have fixed the winxp standby issue. i changed the power setting scheme to ‘always on’ , from ‘home and office’ . based on my acknowledged feeble memory, i don’t remember changing the power settings to begin with. but now it works. haven’t a clue why it would make any difference, since the monitor off after:, hd off after: and standby after: , all set the usual amounts, standby now works properly.

when i have a chance i will try changing win7 power settings to something illogical and see if that helps.
