Using Powerpoint 97 (Windows 98), I can not get the slide numbers to appear in a presentation. If I do the View Header and Footer and check date and time, the slide number shows up with that, but I can’t get it by itself. Any suggestions?

The slide numbers are set using the Slide Master.
      Select View/Master/Slide Master.
Add the slide number in the Number Area on the bottom of the slide.

Thank you for replying. That wasn’t working, but I finally got around it by putting in a text box and inserting the numbers that way. By any chance, do you know if you can insert an object or picture in a header or footer in Powerpoint? And if so, how?

If you want the picture to appear on each slide, use the Slide Master.
Open View/Master/Slide Master. In the Slide Master, use Insert/Picture. Size your picture to fit in the footer, or size the footer to accomodate your picture.
Close the Slide Master, and your graphic should appear on each slide.

Thank you very much. That works great. It seems so simple now that you told me how to do it.

There are 2 ways to do what you need:
      – when going to View Header Footer, don’t check the date or the footer checkboxes but do check the slide number checkbox. In the little preview box, you should see an empty box with a border around it where the date and footer would be but a filled in box for the slide number
      – go to the master slide and just delete the placeholder boxes for date and placeholder. Now if you go to View Header Footer, it doesn’t matter whether these are checked or not. The preview window won’t show any boxes (empty or filled) for these 2 items. I don’t like this approach since you may change your mind later and want a footer and/or date. then you need to recreate these in the master.

Above worked for me on ppt 97.
