When trying to view pictures as a slideshow I don’t find that option. This is what I find when I search help for the topic

To view your pictures as a slide show
    1. Open My Pictures.
    2. Under Picture Tasks, click View as a slide show.
    Notes
โ€ข To open My Pictures, double-click the My Documents icon on your desktop, and then double-click the My Pictures folder.
โ€ข Use the slide show toolbar buttons to play, pause, move to the previous or next slide, or end the slide show. If the toolbar is not displayed, move the pointer across the screen, and it will appear in the upper-right corner of the screen. You can also use the following keyboard shortcut keys while viewing your pictures as a slide show:

but I don’t seem to have Picture Tasks available. What can I do to correct this?

I would still like an answer to the above but I just found a slide show option under Preview

While in your My Pictures folder (or any other location in Windows Explorer), is your “common tasks” pane visible? Click off your folders if you can see a directory tree on the left. We have a group policy where I work that disallows the common tasks to become active. If your folders are off and you still can’t see the common task area you may have the same policy in place.

Thanks mbarron. I think you have hit on the problem but I have no policies set that I am aware of since I never set any, at least on purpose. I am using the Classic view of Windows Explorer and when I click on the off folder as you suggest I still don’t get common tasks pane. I tried taking that option off and now it does work exactly like you say. Thanks very much.

      Hlewton,
I have XP(H) (SP3) and don’t recognise the procedure you quote. On my computer all I have to do is click on ‘start’ and then select ‘my pictures’ from the resultant menu that’s displayed – (‘my documents’ is a separate option) – Once ‘my pictures’ has been selected then the option to ‘view as a slide show’ is presented to me as the top option on ‘picture tasks’, on the left hand side of the ‘my pictures’ screen. Didn’t think that XP (P) was that different?

      Keith
PS: on all occassions, I only ever have to ‘click once’, not twice.

Thanks Kieth. The procedure I quoted came directly from XP’s help when I searched for slide shows. Please see my reply to the next member for the rest of the story.

Thanks Dave I was wondering about that too because I have many pictures in folders other than the My Pictures folder.

“Classic view of Windows Explorer ”

Your problem is that you are in the Classic mode. The wife uses the Classic mode (even in Vista) and she loses a lot of things that we “Bubble Gum” user have access to. smile

Check the “Properties” of the folder and make sure that on the “Customize” tab that file type is “Photo Album” or “Pictures”, then the slide show will appear in the “Task area” of Windows Explorer.
