Win 2kP, SP2; IE6

Anyone know why the Right click on drives in My Computer (and their shortcuts on the desktop) has suddenly started to take 25-30 secs to drop down the Menu? Defrag makes no difference, nor does uninstalling Norton Utilities and my Virus scanner. Other directories and the links on the Quick Launch bar work normally.
I though it had happened after installing Office 2000, but the FindFast feature does not seem to be active.

Once I saw something similar. On Win2kPro installation, when I right-click on any drive icon and choose Properties, nothing is happen. I couldn’t figure it out what was wrong, but upgrading from patched IE5.5SP1 to IE5.5SP2 eliminates the problem. I suspect one of IE5.5SP1 security patches.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I’m using IE6. At least it gives me somewhere to look in the registry. I might even try a ‘repair’.

You haven’t got any maps to unavailable shares? I believe that is supposed to make opening up ‘One’s Computer’ slow in the first place…

I am one of those who DETEST anything labelled ‘My…’. I absolutely refuse to use My Pictures, My Documents etc.
And apart from anything, if I had said My computer, Merc might have thought I was talking about My computer, not his.

Do you run a foreign language version of Windows? I wonder what do they call it in German, French etc?

Can’t agree with you more. Always made my skin crawl, but then I preferred Warner Bros toons to Disney. Partly understood once how it had got into the Redmond mindset after having watched a video feed of two Office Lead Developers explainging “exciting new features”. If I have the option, I go through the Registry after a clean install and relabel them “Here”, “Home” and “Pix” respectively.

The German equivalents are: “Arbeitsplatz” (workplace), “Eigene Dateien” (own files), “Eigene Bilder” (own pictures) and “Eigene Musik”. I have only a vague memory of a French setup. Hungarian has a local equivalent of Arbeitsplatz but the others have the ubiquitous “My”.

I just re-name it mc. No shared anythings as far as I can see. As a precaution after reading your post, I set all drives to ‘no sharing’. No difference. No amount of repairing Win 2k (which reverted to non-SP2 and IE 5.00) affected this problem. I even uninstalled NAV, NU, MS Office and others. No effect.
I now have to decide whether to live with it or to start 2k from a clean installation. Pshaw!

Do your other menus (i.e Start > Programs etc.) open at a reasonable speed?
If you run TaskManager, what is showing as taking the CPU while you wait?

All other RClicks work immediately. Only Drives and shortcuts to Drives are a problem. In TaskManager, CPU 99% Idle processes; when Drive is RClicked Explorer.exe goes up to 99%.

Grasping at straws here…
Is it possible something has been added to the right_click menu, but the something has been removed and Explorer is still trying to load it?
I noticed if I right_click on a drive in my My Computer, I get additional options for Partion Magic, Power Desk and my Virus software. Now, if one of these applications disappeared but the menu still expected an entry…..

Searching brought up this John Savill tip on how to ADD a R_Click item – it may give you some clues for where to look in the registry….

Hi Leif
I found what was causing the trouble. It was the Smart Reader software I’d installed. When I tried another reader, it needed its own software and insisted on removing the previous. Once it did this (and I aborted the rest of the set-up) the RClick reverted to normal. Unfortunately, once I tried to continue the software installation the problem returned. So my 2kP set-up doesn’t like Smart-Card readers. The up-side is that the new reader does not crash XP.
