I don’t know if this is a hardware problem but my computer takes an age to log off and shut down. I have defraged and tidied the disk and there doesn’t seem to be anything running that shouldn’t be when I look on task manager. I am using windows Vista if that is any help. Any ideas?

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 22, 2009 at 9:24 pm #1148526Slow log off and shutdowns are a common complaint of users. If you Google the term, you will see a “ton” of hits on the subject. Usually it’s a matter of finding out just what app or utility or program is having a bad time cleaning up before shutdown.
One thing that is sometimes neglected is setting the pagefile to NOT clear itself before each shutdown.
If you are comfortable with using REGEDIT and possibly changing registry entries, you can check this:
———————————
Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
Change the data value of the ClearPageFileAtShutdown value in the following registry key to a value of 0:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory Management
If the value does not exist, add the following value:
Value Name: ClearPageFileAtShutdown
Value Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 0
———————————
This is for WinXp but it should also apply to Vista.Another tool to use is to go to START>RUN and type MSCONFIG.EXE
in the General tab check “Diagnostic Startup” button.
Reboot
This will only load the very basic files to get Windows running.
Shutdown and see if it now shuts down in a reasonable time. IF so, go back to Msconfig and check “Selective Satrtup in the General Tab. Go over to the Startup Tab and now check just a few of the items listed there.
Reboot and repeat the above until you can observe what new checked items have caused the slow shutdown.
I know this is a slow and repetitive process but it may be the best way to find out what is causing the slow shutdown.
