Computer: HP laptop dv7-4171us, upgraded from original Win 7 to Win 10 Home 64-bit, version 1607 (OS Build 14393.576).

On every system start/logon I get this message:

    46622-ScreenShot002

    IMHO an annoyance.
Device manager shows two (?) display adapters:

    46623-ScreenShot003

I seriously doubt that the machine has two display adapters despite what device manager says…

HP’s documentation shows that there should be only one adapter:

    46624-ScreenShot004

Does anybody here have any ideas how to resolve that annoyance?
Please other than telling me that HP officially does not support Win 10 on that “old” machine, I know that much.

Any hints or pointers will be greatly appreciated, TIA

I’m guessing that your video driver isn’t 100% compatible with Windows 10.

Here’s how you fix it pre-Windows 10. Do the following steps in order. If any step fixes it, you can stop at that point.

      1. Uninstall both drivers, then let Windows reinstall the correct driver.
      * Right-click on each of the two listings, and choose Uninstall.
      * Right-click on the top item (EJH-HP) and choose “Scan for Hardware Changes”. This will trigger Windows to reinstall the (hopefully one) correct driver.

      2. Use the VEN-DEV method for finding the correct driver, then install that driver.
      * Right-click on whatever driver is listed under Display Adapters, and choose Properties.
      * Go to the Details tab.
      * Click on the Property scrollable list, and choose Hardware IDs.
      * You will see something like this: PCIVEN_1002&DEV_9851&SUBSYS_06571028&REV_00
In this example, VEN (Vendor) is 1002 and DEV (Device) is 9851. This is the make (mfgr) and model of your video card.
      * Now go to the following website and do a search for the driver, using the VEN and/or DEV numbers:
      http://pcidatabase.com/

If you can’t find a 64 bit driver, try the 32 bit driver. If you can’t find a Windows 10 driver, then get the closest one you can find. In other words, try to find a Windows 8.1 driver, then an 8 driver, then a 7 driver, etc. The closer you are to Windows 10, the more likely the driver will work.

      3. Try a Windows update for the video driver only.
It is considered almost blasphemy with some to resort to Windows update to get a hardware driver. I normally would not recommend it; but if you can’t solve this any other way, you might get lucky with Windows update.

Hopefully all of the above will work with Windows 10. I’m pretty sure that these steps are close to however you do it in Windows 10.

      Jim,
Wow, what an extensive reply, thanks.

Uninstalling both adapters WITH removing of the drivers and then rebooting always brought BOTH drivers back.

VEN resolves to HP. HP has nothing for Win 10 (or 8), only Win 7 drivers. Wasn’t there a driver format change from 7 to 8?

AMD’s Catalyst driver package does not solve it either. I assume that HP has a tiny tweak so that AMD drivers don’t work. Running AMD Catalyst software ends in an unspecified error message, the link to explanations is completely dead.

Windows Update has not offered anything for the display/graphics/video adapter.

Do you hear my teeth grinding? I will have to get used to that annoyance and just click on OK.

The crazy thing is that this started to happen after some automatically updates from Windows Update. I just can’t pinpoint the date and time any more.

Have you tried the W8 HP driver?

      cheers, Paul

Paul, for this computer HP has ONLY Win 7 drivers on their web site.

AMD does have Win 10 drivers for the HD 5000 series http://www.amd.com/en-us/markets/game/downloads

As the alert is on the 5000, download those drivers to see if you get the same error.

Have you had this laptop from new ?

Both msinfo32 and dxdiag don’t give anything specific for my single Intel adapter, but dxdiag may tell you if there are any problems under the Display tab.

You can go Start and type either of those and press enter.

Sudo15, thanks a bunch. Now it’s getting crazy, msinfo32 and dxdiag agree with each other that the machine has an AMD HD 4800 display adapter installed.

Tonight it’s too late for me. It’ll have to wait for tomorrow or even Monday.

How long has this been going on with the pop up ?

Do they both say HD 4800 or is that a typo for 4200 ?

The only time I’ve seen a similar issue was when the motherboard came with a built-in video adapter but there was also an Add-in PCIe X16 video card and the built-in didn’t get automatically disabled, had to go into the BIOS to disable the built-in adapter. But not all BIOSes have that setting.

IMO, you need a foolproof way of determining what actual GPU hardware you have. It all starts with that. Some of the HP laptops have stickers on them advertising the GPU hardware they incorporate. That’s one place to start.

Another possibility is the HP web site. HP has pretty good model/feature descriptions on their site, from what I remember.

      HP U.S.

Still another possibility is the GPU-Z program. This scans your GPU hardware and will tell you all sorts of interesting information about it.

      GPU-Z

The web page is a bit confusing! The correct thing to do is to click on “Standard Version” at the top left of the page. Then answer the questions that follow as fits your needs and preferences (the worst that can happen is you choose somewhat less than optimal choices, so you can’t go too far wrong).
