I am looking for two pieces of software:

1 – A while back, I posted asking for the name of a program that would provide a cross reference all Access objects i.e. in what forms, reports, queries, VBA programs etc. the objects are used. A package costing about $30 (US) was highly recommended at the time. I did not purchase it then but now I’m interested. Would someone please remind me of the name and website of this software.

2 – I also need a VBA routine that will encrypt / decrypt data at a field level in an Access table. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

If you click the little dropdown arrow next to your name in a post, you’ll see links to retrieve your topics (threads) or posts.
The one you mean is probably Field Xref (2007).

I’ve never seen software that encrypts data at the field level in Access. Access can encrypt/decrypt a complete database, not individual tables or fields.
Custom code to encrypt/decrypt would probably have a serious impact on performance.

Thanks, Hans. The new and improved Woody’s site has all kinds of features that I need to learn about.

Regarding the encryption / decryption, I may just go with storing the last 4 digits in the end of day processing (The field is a credit card field that is only used for that business day’s processing), if the client agrees to that approach.

        Thanks again.

Actually there are some options for field encryption in an Access database – we used one nearly a decade ago for encrypting credit card numbers, but I don’t think the company is still in business. However there is a pertinent link at Encrypting privacy information in MS Access fields. Also, it appears that if you use an ACCDB format for your database, the Windows suite of data encryption tools is accessible from VBA and can be used – but that’s not something I’ve ever tinkered with. And finally, there appear to be some ActiveX add-ins that will do credit card verification and do encryption – we used one some time ago called PC-Charge. I think it has changed hands once or twice since then, but that might be something to explore.

            Wendell,

The file is an mdb file, not an accdb file, but thanks for the suggestion.

Interestingly, the client is considering doing business with Verifone that supports a package called PcCharge. I wonder if there’s any connection.

We had developed a restaurant operation application for this client 7-8 years ago that he’s still using at two locations. At the time, we interfaced the app to a package called POS Partner 2000, supported by Vital. Supposedly, TSys (took over Vital) is going to stop processing credit card transactions at the end of the year. That’s the reason we’ve been engaged to switch over to PcCharge.

            Thanks.

I’ve not verified it, but if you so a search on PC-Charge it does return the Verifone website. And we used that product for several years and it worked as advertised.

        Thanks, Wendell.

BTW, I had an issue opening the zip file for the Access 2007 version (His website says “beta”) of Rick Fisher’s program. I wrote to him but haven’t yet heard back. In the meanwhile, I found this program:

        http://www.skrol29.com/us/vtools.php

At first glance, it seems to do exactly what I need and you certainly can’t beat the price (free). So far, I’ve tested the “find” function but haven’t yet tested the “replace” function.

As you can see, it does much more than “find and replace”.
