When I shut down win7, a screen flashes to close a program running which I can’t find. It flashes fast and I can’t view this window. How do I stop this flash to see what is running and to close what ever is running in the back ground. I hope I have described the problem to the understanding of the reader.

Any other way to see this window that flashes before I can read it. My be an installation is incomplete or any program removal is incomplete. Any indication. Or how can I pause that screen to see what it is

AskWoody LoungerJuly 6, 2015 at 5:23 pm #1513958You could check to see if you still get the flash when shutting down in a clean boot and if not, enable one Start up item at a time until it reappears, or it may be one of the non MS services.
You would have to manually shut it down after the initial reboot.

AskWoody PlusJuly 6, 2015 at 6:05 pm #1513959Ever since I installed those last 2 kernel updates KB3057839 and KB3063858, my shutdown has been slowed down and I also get a quick screen that windows background needs to close
( at least that is all I can guess at in the flash before shutdown actually occurs ). This only happens on my x64 win 7 not my x86 win 7.
It never did that before the 2 kernel updates.Don't take yourself so seriously, no one else does

InactiveJuly 6, 2015 at 6:56 pm #1513961I performed clean boot and still no difference. The flashing screen shows something like verifying ….. can’t read further as it disappears quickly. And yes the system is x64 and windows performed auto update. I guess this too could be kernel updates. If it is, how do I rectify the problem.

Although I haven’t messed with it yet, I assume that you would have to uninstall the kernel updates one at a time to see if it stops the problem. If not, then reinstall them.

InactiveJuly 8, 2015 at 4:28 pm #1514279My problem solved. I viewed all windows updates where there was a link to uninstall an update or fix it. I downloaded fix it and ran it and my problem solved. I assume that one or more update was installed and the system got stuck at verification stage. Since Fix it corrected it the flashing window disappeared when shutting down.

AskWoody PlusJuly 7, 2015 at 4:01 pm #1514146Without a full list of all processes running, we can do no more than guess.
Yup, I know. When I followed the tutorial, the last 2 entry’s were for kernel ( one was manage and I forget what the other one was ). I have a feeling that it has to do with those kernel updates that I mentioned earlier since this never happened until I installed them from WU’s.

AskWoody PlusJuly 7, 2015 at 7:40 pm #1514202I have both of those KB’s installed yet I see no signs of the issues reported here.
Interestingly enough, my other x64 win 7 computer ( a new HP Probook laptop ) in the house doesn’t have the same problem and it has those updates. It seems like an odd coincidence that the slower shutdowns happened immediately after the kernel updates on this one.
Oh well, it’s more of an annoyance I guess and hopefully nothing serious.Don't take yourself so seriously, no one else does

AskWoody PlusJuly 9, 2015 at 8:50 am #1514418Thanks noormotani,
I found the link you describe but it doesn’t list the problem I am having and it didn’t take me to the MS fixit site. As Satrow said earlier, without knowing what the window say’s ( in my case ), it’s hard to pinpoint what is having a hard time shutting down.Don't take yourself so seriously, no one else does

AskWoody PlusJuly 11, 2015 at 8:39 pm #1514796I captured it with cell phone video tonight. All it says is “waiting for background programs to close”. It doesn’t say what programs.
I guess I’ll just let it go but was just curious as to why it started after the kernel updates. Another windows mystery, LOL.
Thanks for the suggestions on capturing it.Don't take yourself so seriously, no one else does

AskWoody PlusJuly 18, 2015 at 8:32 pm #1515900The trace may not be necessary. I have a NVIDIA video card and the GeForce Experience program installed that checks for updates. I haven’t paid much attention to it for a couple of months and evidently it doesn’t want to be ignored for that long.
Yesterday I updated the program and the video card driver and the shutdown problem went away. I have shutdown 2 nights in a row without the slowness and background window.
Kinda reminds me of my girlfriend if I don’t pay attention to her.Don't take yourself so seriously, no one else does

AskWoody PlusJuly 20, 2015 at 12:27 pm #1516085LOL, Girlfriend 3.x has held that status/version # for about 11 years now. Wife 1.0 isn’t looking secure yet, much like win 10.
Beware of what gets installed w/ Wife 1.0. NewHouseMortgage 1.7,(really a trial subscription that never ends!), Mother-in-Law 80.2, With Father-in-Law addon, and of course RugRat .1 that often gets ‘self installed’
:blink::blush::unsure::P:
Just because you don't know where you are going doesn't mean any road will get you there.
