Hi folks, have a quick question.
I have a friend who has a ton of favorites organized into folders, and we can find no way to sort alphabetically. I looked at MS’s KB, and they indicate that you’re supposed to be able to right-click anywhere in the Favorites menu and see a “Sort by Name” command. That “sort by name” command is nowhere to be found on her computer. Is there any way to get it back? Or rather, to have it show up in the first place?

    Thanks for your help.

Click Favorites in the Drop Down Menu (File, Edit, etc.), move your mouse down to the links section and right click, select Sort by Name.

…but it took me 15 minutes to try and figure out how to write it down…my screenshot was too large in irfanview, and the reduced size didn’t show the wording clearly. evilgrin

The key here is you can’t click anywhere in the dialogue box or in the favorites menu; it has to be on an item–any item in the list, not necessarily “links”. You can force sorting alphabetically at the registry:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersion
      ExplorerMenuOrderFavoritesMenu

In the right pane click on “Order” to highlight it, press the Delete key, and click Yes when prompted. Restart Windows.

The same procedure will work for the Start Menu…

      References for this:
177482: Start Menu and Favorites May Not Sort in Alphabetical Order
259735: Favorites May Not Sort in Alphabetical Order
*Note: Microsoft says in KB259735 that right clickinging and hitting “Sort by Name” may stop working when you hit 193 favorites. That may happen, but I’ve never seen it with hundreds of favorites in XP.

There are also a number of features you might like in my favorite two free Favorites Downloads:

        Thanks all,
My problem was that I was trying to click in the Favorites Pane on the left side of the browser window instead of in the drop-down menu. I actually tried the registry order key delete thing and it had no effect (the computer is running W2K). It seemed almost insane to me to require a registry edit just to do a stupid simple thing like sorting, so I’m glad it turned out to not be a big deal.

Now onto bigger and better things. compute
        Thanks again,

        Charlie T.

          Charlie–

You don’t need the regedit to sort of course–it is supposed to make the list alphabetize every time without you having to go click–hardly back breaking labor, but many people could make a long list of tweaks that require reg edits that probably should have been added to the operating system. Some of them are in this list of tweaks.

Take a look at the links to Favs Home Page and Favs to Go linked above– you can still use Favorites and links any way your OS allows–but they also make web pages out of your favorites with extra functionality–and you can’t beat their price–free.

hello I must have reached the 193 coz my favorites no longer will sort by name, and Ive wondered why because I used it often (since it stopped working), now I know, thanks to your post.

Dave makes an important distinction–it is somewhat amusing how the developers arrive at some of their figures–maybe there are mathematical reasons.

That is 193 listed in the root of Favorites, not in ALL of the sub-folders.

First I ever heard of such a thing. 424 entries in the Favs root, all alphabetical.

hello Hi Bruce, I would have arrived at around the 195 folders mark, not just individual fav site links, and there a heaps of links within those folders. The screenshot looks like links, rather than folders? I noticed that mine began resisting the “sort by name” function, when I created more new folders after some saved links, perhaps this upset the apple cart, either that or little green men are running around inside my machine having an Irish party! smile

              Hi, Cyber ~

Yes, the SS show just the favorites URLs, not the folders of which I have 58 holding another 1,054 URLs. (I seem to add them faster than I can finish perusing them and prune!) We may have to resort to donning the wizard hat & robe to cast a level 8 leprechaun liquidator.

rofl Either a wizard or don bright red shoes, I often feel as if Im on the yellow brick road and the wicked witch of the north lurks in the dark, poised to pounce. Your idea of a leprechaun liquidator is entering a whole world of possibilities, BUT wait, maybe its the leprechaun that keeps the gremlins at bay hiding smile

I have hundreds and it isn’t making a difference–maybe I have a thousand or so. I’d like to know where the number was determined or why. I don’t think a lot of machines are able to know they have that limit–I saw it in “Cause” in this KB and logged it in the gallary with 12% max on the slider for System Restore–but not 192 and not 194 and not 195.50 either.

Nice Kelly Green on that gui– it almost looks like it fluoresces under UV light.

I wonder is there a Windows 2000 equivalent. I still have many friends who are still using Windows 2000, plus I also use Win 2000.

I can’t imagine that there would be a reason why they would not work with Windows 2000, The link to Kelly’s Tweaks in this case is not for any of her tweaks, it is because the download to Faves to Go is available on the list– the only place to get Faves to Go that I know.

PC Mag used to offer a link to its download and many others free, but now they charge a yearly fee for their links/downloads. I would think your browser version would be the key anyway. I wouldn’t expect you to have a problem with either of these two in Win 2K.
