Once I have done a spell check and have added paragraphs and need to a another spell check , I want Microsoft word only to check any new words that have been added and it must not put a red squiggle under a number of the previous sentences that have already been checked -see attached sample showing a red squiggle. I copied this sample data from another word document that had already been checked, mis-spelt one word and a red squiggle appeared under a number of words that had already been checked

It’s not clear from the sample you’ve attached, where the issue is arising – it doesn’t look like there are any spelling errors in this one sentence (although there are green grammar checker squiggles) – did you mean to attach a longer sample?

One option is to highlight just the newly added text, and then run SpellCheck (F7 key). It will only work through the highlighted text.

However, sometimes it does seem like SpellCheck resets itself on a whim, and rechecks all words; that is, if you have told it to ignore “nanoparticle” in the earlier, already-SpellChecked text, sometimes it will ask about “nanoparticle” again in the new text anyway.

SpellCheck is just a little bit unpredictable, in my opinion.

It seems like the sample document is the same as earlier – just one sentence.

But it is worth differentiating between red squiggles and green squiggles:

Red squiggles indicate a word that is flagged as being misspelled.
Green squiggles indicate a fragment or phrase that is flagged as violating grammar rules.

To turn off the green squiggles in Word 2007 go to:
Office button > Word options button > Proofing, and turn off the checkmark next to “Mark grammar errors as you type”.

Spell check will do a variety of vague things, especially when the documents are being edited by users who have different langauge settings – American English vs Brittish English and Australian English being my examples where the effects you describe are experienced most frequently. Unless you can convince everyone to use the one version of English and the one template as this will also effect spelling in individual documents (and I only use Australian English for instance and won’t change – it is a fraught process I don’t fight) then these problems will continue.
You can use a setting that supposedly prevents Word from re-checking spelling in selected text but again, the results of that are not guaranteed, and if someone selects all text, then starts a spell check, it seems to erase any of the previous settings and starts again…
