Hi all, I use OpenOffice for my office software programs on my Win 7 laptop. I have a 65 page document with imbedded images that needs a final spell-grammar check. OO does fine for simple spelling errors, but doesn’t have a grammar checker.  I don’t see an extension at OpenOffice that is well-recommended. I opened it in Word Starter but the images with their captions got all skewed. Saving it back to an odt file didn’t correct these formatting problems. I had used this work-around before without problems, but not this time. Today I did a little googling for a well-rated, free program and found several, some of which one uploads the document to their site.

Can you please recommend a software or online spelling/grammar check for an .odt file?

    Thanks so much!

never mind 😀 I opened the odt doc in Word Starter and then on my desktop and as Word found errors, I corrected them on the desktop version. Thanks anyway

      … heh.

I pretty much gave up on those automated checking tools a couple of decades ago. Every now and then I check if they’ve gotten better and have a laugh.

If I need to do a proper strict grammar check I’ll do it myself with a proper grammar manual. More likely to get it right that way. Been proofreading family members’ papers since I was about 12…

LibreOffice has at least Lightproof and Languagetool available that do English, don’t know if they work in current versions of OpenOffice.

(You didn’t specify language so I expect English. And then you get to figure out which variant of English to use, international documents can be a weird mix… tried with some NATO public documents and…)

I’m renewing my search for a spell/grammar checker for odt files and found that LanguageTool does support odt files and lots more. See image. Also it appears to have received excellent reviews. So I may give it a try.langtool-scrnsht
