Spellchecking in Word 2000

I did a spell check today and it didn’t pick up on the letter “t” that was sitting on its own in the document. It is not a full word and on other occasions that would have been picked up as a spelling error? Why didn’t it today?

Was it an upper-case or a lower-case t? If it was upper-case, the option to ignore words all in uppercase was probably selected. Go to Tools/Options/Spelling and Grammar and deselect that option.

Thanks for your answer.

I turned off the Ignore words in uppercase and placed some uppercase “T”‘s and lower case “t”‘s in a document as standalone words, but it still seems to see them as correct.

Any other thoughts you could offer would really help.

This is quite interesting – I just tried it myself.
It appears you can enter any single letter and Word 2K will accept it. Maybe it has something to do with not claiming an error for paragraph numbering? (a, b, c etc)
As soon as you enter tt, though the spelling is flagged.
One exception seems to be i, for which i, ii, iii, iv etc are acceptable.
Never noticed this before.
If you find ‘t’ is a consistent error, you could enter it in Auto-correct to b replaced with ‘tt’. But then you will never be able to write t-shirt again.

I’ve never done it myself, but I think you can set up an Exception Dictionary in Word, contain words that you want marked as incorrect even though they’re in the main dictionary. You could then define every letter of the alphabet (except I) as in invalid spelling.
