Is anyone else having problems downloading the latest Spybot updates? Both at home (dial-up modem) and at work (T1 line), the Search for Updates shows 2 files available. But downloading just stalls–Task Manager shows “not responding.” Time of day doesn’t make any difference.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 8, 2003 at 12:28 am #741387Finally–succeeded in downloading the updates, which I had tried 3-4 days ago, and daily since then at a variety of times.. I’m still having my doubts about Spybot, though. Previously–2-3 months ago–when I ran Spybot, it always picked up spyware that AdAware had missed. Lately, after I run AdAware first and then the most recent download of Spybot, I always get a “Congratulations. No immediate threats were found.” The same response is true just a short time ago after I was finally able to download the Spybot updates and run them: “Congratulations . . . .”

AskWoody LoungerNovember 8, 2003 at 4:20 am #741427I have intermittant problems downloading updates & I’m convinced it’s on their end. Sometimes clicking an alternate site helps. I’m using DSL. I, too, usually get the congratulations message. However, I’m also using SpywareBlaster to prevent downloading adware & spyware & I also use Pest Patrol. I figure that I just don’t have spyware. Each has a tendency to pick up things the other misses, & I’m not sure I don’t get false positives.
For example, every time I go online to Bank of America, I get a cookie that Pest Patrol lists. I’m really not clear how a cookie could work as spyware. As far as I know, only B of A can read it, & the cookie can’t tell where else I’ve been. I don’t get any pop-ups (or unders) from it, so I’m not sure why it’s classified as spyware.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 7, 2003 at 11:20 pm #741365I went to test update which worked fine 3 days ago, and then I got the error shown below followed by a Spybot faulting application error that wanted to crash IE to the desktop that I was able to stop by opening a new version of win explorer. It will do this 10/10 times right now, so something’s up. Otherwise without the update it will run as always. Maybe something on the different spybot boards.
Ed. SMBP– I should have added I’m on a cable connection that recently widened its pipes. I honestly don’t know if the faulting app error is my problem or more universal, but I haven’t had any in a good while but can reproduce that attempt to crash me 10/10 or more times.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 8, 2003 at 12:16 am #741383It depends upon which site you use for downloading the updates. If one doesn’t work, just go to the next one. Most of the time I use the FXClick/USA site. BTW, I just checked, and there aren’t any new updates as of this moment…I did my update a few days ago. I am not using the BETA version either…am also on cable
.
Sometimes the problem stems from too many users trying to download the updates, that’s when one starts going thru the list of sites to find a fast site.-

AskWoody LoungerNovember 8, 2003 at 3:06 am #741418I didn’t try to go to any of their sites, Lonnie–I never worried about doing that since you could do it from the Spybot application that links you, I guess, to one or the other. I never thought it didn’t go to some link, but since it invited you to update, I never worried about parsing them or the servers.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 8, 2003 at 7:59 pm #741559Hi Brian:
I find that I have to “fail” first, before the mirror site options become available. Otherwise, it says “No mirror selected”. Apparently, it’s a known fact because in their help menu, they state:“FAQ #020
Some user have reported they are not able to download updates. The ‘Search for updates’ reveals updates, but they cannot be downloaded. Often a ‘HTTP Error 403’ or ‘bad checksum’ is displayed. This has a simple reason – thousands of people trying to download from the default server, which can’t handle such a burden. If you try again, have a second look at the menu bar. It has a pull-down item to select a mirror. Click the arrow beside it, and select a different location, where you’ll most probably have better chances to download. (Spybot-S&D 1.2 will set a random mirror as the default to better distribute the load)Current problems with the main installer download have the same reason – the servers not being able to handle such large amounts of visitors. Even the University isn’t able to deal with many thousands of downloads at the same time. Please have some patience; more mirrors are being added again.”
Cheers, -
