    Hi all

I have Windows SQL server 2005 installed as a new installation (ie, not an update of SQL server 2000) on my machine. The Microsoft security update (KB948109) won’t work, and I keep getting reminders that it still needs to be installed. KB 952287 doesn’t help, and I don’t know why the update won’t work or where to go for help. I tried the Microsoft site but couldn’t find anything relevant to this error. The error message I get is simply “Some updates could not be installed”, and I’ve retried several times over the last few weeks with no change. There may already be a thread on this – if so, can someone point me to it, or if not and anyone can throw some light on this for me I will be very grateful

    thanks

You don’t mention which OpSys you are running, but it does seem to occur most times when both Server and Server Express are installed onto Vista, however there are some other reports of this error on other systems. Seems as if some sql related services are running, then it won’t update.
This blog post here, amongst others, such as this one offer a solution.
      Get the stand-alone update here.

Hi, thanks for that. I’ve downloaded the standalone update but it still won’t work. I’m running on XP pro SP3. I’m not even sure how critical the update is. So far I haven’t managed to get the update working, but not sure how much effort to put into this if it isn’t an essential update. Still can’t find any help from Microsoft. Anyone else having this issue, or has solved it? The next step will be to work through the blog info, but it’s going to take a little time

For info for anyone reading this, I’ve managed to identify the problem as a permissions issue, and having resolved that the updates now work. Might be ueful info for someone

Glad to hear you’ve got a handle on the problem. What was the permissions issue, if I may ask?

My PC was set up with me as administrator (XP), and I assumed that I would therefore have permissions to install anything I wanted/needed – but with SQL server, not so! I had to specifically add this permission so the service would start, and once it was starting properly, the update worked. It was quite tricky finding this, because the first stage was that the service wasn’t starting, and it took me a little time to figure that out, then I had to find out why, and that took a little time too! It now seems ok, with services starting properly, though I still don’t know what that particular SQL Server service does on my machine – I have another program (Sage Taxation Suite) which uses a different SQL service, and that one was fine, but there is an additional SQL service trying to run that was the problem. So, still not sure whether all the ferreting was worthit, but I know more now than I did before, so that’s of value I guess.
