I’ve used SQL Express for a few years, and am interested in trying the new/free version of SQL Server Developer Edition.

Can anyone tell me if this installs on my local PC, or must it be on a network location? Is it possible to put it on another PC in my Workgroup and connect to it there (assuming that PC is powered on)?

MS says it requires only a Windows license, not a Server license. Has anyone done this?

    Thank you.

The Developer edition is to be used for test and development only not production. It is the same functionally as the Enterprise version. See Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2016 for detailed requirements.

As with any SQL Server install you may install SQL Server on one machine and access it from another.

Developer Edition has been supported in all Windows client OSes. Not sure what the requirements are for the 2016 edition. I had it previously on Windows 8.1, which since I upgraded to 10. SQL Server 2014 as well as 2012 run on Windows 7 without issues, too.

Yes, SQL Server can take requests from other computers that can reach the computer where SQL Server is installed, via networking. SQL Server supports several network protocols and you may need to enable TCP / IP to connect from a remote computer.
