On Sunday, 4/14, I installed the latest round of XP patches, rebooted the system and got error 0xC00021A. I can’t boot into safe mode or use the last good configuration. Each time I get this error. I suspect KB2820917 (MS13-033) caused the problem but I’m not sure. Does anyone have any ideas other than a full repair from the XP CD?

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody PlusApril 16, 2013 at 11:56 am #1388065The full message is
STOP: C000021a {Fatal System Error}
Status 0xC0000139 (0x00000000 0x00000000)I’ve tried replacing the winsrv.dll and win32k.sys files that were updated by KB2808735 and KB2820917. These were in the $NtUninstall….$ directories. I can’t get into the registry to see what GinaDLL is being used. That’s the next thing that I suspect. Any ideas?
Worst case, I’ve got a full system image from sometime last year. I could restore that to a new drive and then refresh my data from this drive. What a pain.

ldelmarter,
Hello… Two questions
1. How are you trying to access “Safe Mode” …I Know that on my XP Rig i need to keep hitting F-8 while hitting enter ( @ same time) while trying to boot …
2. Whats wrong with trying a System Repair from the XP disk?
One other thing if you are using or have a 3rd party “Imaging Recovery Disk” you could try to Image the Broken OS ( booting from recovery disk), so no matter what you try …you can always put it back to the “Broken” OS…Just a thought :cheers: Regards Fred

AskWoody PlusApril 16, 2013 at 2:54 pm #1388110Yes, I’m hitting F8 to get to the boot menu, then selecting Safe Mode. The disk image is newer than I thought. It’s from 12/2012. I have a new 2TB drive for that system and was planning on installing Windows 7 and setting up dual boot one of these days. I guess one of these days just arrived.

AskWoody LoungerApril 17, 2013 at 10:15 am #1388199And after fixing many total XP screwups, caused by MS Updates, on my customer’s computers,
I keep saying, “Turn OFF Auto Updates” but nobody listens. 🙁MS does NOT want you running XP. Period.
So it’s not to their advantage to send you Good Updates, and many updates are NOT Good at all.Now with the thought in mind that anything can happen at any time, read my signature line.
Just having to go back one week, you can loose much valuable data, pictures, email, etc.
I try to make my C drive backups at least once a week, and I back up all my data every day, to two
external media.Remember “the only bad backup is the one you decided NOT to make”.
Happy Computing!

AskWoody PlusApril 17, 2013 at 11:48 am #1388204I agree and always have multiple backups including a full disk image. Unfortunately it takes most of a day to image the disk so I sometimes put it off. However, I do have full backups of the documents folders and other important data. I also am able to mount and access the drive so I’m in the process of making another backup of everything before repairing the Windows installation, just in case. This system will be running Windows 7 after this is all over.
