I have noticed some peculiar behavior lately with Word when it first opens. The left 3/4 of the screen appears first, then a split second later the last 1/4 of the screen is drawn. This only happens when I open to a new, blank document, i.e., when the program per se is started, not when an existing document or template is opened. Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening?

I suspect that space for the task pane is reserved, then filled in later.
      1. Download and install the free Task Pane Controller add-in from Controlling the Task Pane, even when add-ins are present, and see if playing with its settings helps (it adds an item to the Tools menu)
      2. If that doesn’t help, see Phil Rabichow’s Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (97/2000).

I went to Tools/Options/View and deselected “Startup task pane,” and that got rid of it. Apparently Word was set to show the task pane but only started to show it. Must have been from my having closed it the last time it showed up. That’s ok, I’ve always considered the task pane a pain, never willingly use it. Thanks for the advice.
