I’m using Thunderbird as my client e-mail program.

Occasionally I’ve receive an e-mail with weird characters in it (see attachment).

It doesn’t happen in all e-mails; seems to be random. And does not happen in the e-mails from the same sender.

Is this a problem on my end or is it something with the way the e-mail is encoded?

    Thanks.

Try going into Thunderbird’s program settings (specifically the Privacy & Security area) and see if T’Bird is set to NOT display remote content is messages, per the image below/attached image.

Note the image is from the listing labeled “Settings” and NOT the listing labeled “Account Settings”.

If it’s set to display what it calls remote content, block it by clearing the checkbox and see if that changes anything.

If nothing else helps, try this:

Under Tools -> Options (or Settings) -> Advanced -> General, press the Config Editor button and then type mail.strictly_mime in the search field. Changing that from false to true has solved similar problems.  If it doesn’t help, change it back.  FWIW.
