I’m using outline numbering and style separators to have only a portion of the text show in the ToC. At some point when I start entering text, I get a strange, gray underline. I’ve noticed that when this underline appears, the text following will not show in the ToC, even though I’ve marked the levels and body text appropriately. A sample’s attached. I can’t figure out why that underline is appearing and Word help doesn’t mention gray underline. Help?

Some text has been formatted as hidden (this causes the dotted underline). Select the text, making sure *not* to select a style separator, then select Format | Font and click it until the ‘Hidden text’ check box is clear. If you accidentally “unhide” a style separator, select it and format it as ‘Hidden text’.
Then select the TOC and press F9 to update it.
