You shouldn’t be using Flash Player. Period.

But if you have to use it, I say wait — unless you’re running VMWare.

I don’t use Flash. It’s just it comes with Windows 8.1 and 10, so I’m wondering if I should install the patch. But I’ll hold off on it then.

@Woody:  Firefox automatically updates the Adobe Flash, now at version 27.0.0.183, updated on 10/25/17.    II have mine designated as “ask to activate”, and there is a side note:

“Blocks dangerous & intrusive Flash content”.

It can be disabled, or “activated”.  I am thinking it should be “disabled” as dangerous as it is.   Thank you for all of the good information, and great website!    🙂

I thought this must have meant a change since yesterday:

According to Release Notes, no changes since Oct. 25th, but according to the About Flash page, updates have been issued for other than Win8.1 & Win10 (links to both pages above)

but About Flash Player is still showing that the current version for Win8.1 & Win10 is 27.0.0.170, and there is still no change made to Release Notes

From reading the KB4051613 support notes, this looks like the functionality update from October 25th, which was issued then as direct installation for Active-X, Firefox, Chrome, Opera/Chromium browsers.

Another update for Adobe Flash Player, is for functionality NOT security reasons:

Release Notes for Flash Player 27 and AIR 27
Welcome to the Flash Player and AIR 27 release notes!

Check this out, directly from Microsoft:

          https://support.microsoft.com/en-hk/help/4051613/update-for-adobe-flash-player-november-1-2017

“This update resolves issues in Adobe Flash Player that is installed on any supported edition of Windows Server Version 1709, Windows Server 2016, Windows 10 Version 1709 (Fall Creators Update), Windows 10 Version 1703 (Creators Update), Windows 10 Version 1607, Windows 10 Version 1511, Windows 10 RTM, Windows 8.1, or Windows RT 8.1.”

There really is a version or dot-version update in there. And it looks like the KB article was updated Nov. 1st. That’s as out of band as MS Updates gets these days.

I downloaded the Windows Update Catalog versions for 64-bits and 32-bits Win 10 1703 from the Windows Update Catalog Nov. 2nd. Even if these don’t show in the browsers as a new dot-version, they are new Windows 10 versions. Possibly just stability fixes, but maybe security updates in there as well. Hard to say from the description.

I think they are mostly fixes for VMWare, not security fixes.

Whatever the issue, the update moves IE and Edge from Flash Player Version 27.0.0.170 to 27.0.0.183.  Meaning, it brings the two MS browsers into line with Chrome and Firefox.

I found Adobe had released Flash v27.0.0.183 on October 25th and downloaded and installed the new release that day. The download site, MajorGeeks.com, made me aware of the new release.

This is so incredibly screwed-up. Vintage Microsoft.

I just got a tweet from @MichaelSandstro that says:

The catalogue has no file for 64 bit 7.

      • #143213

??? Win7 never gets Flash through WU or Catalog. MS took over Flash for Win8.1 and Win10, but Win7 gets it from Adobe.

Microsoft don’t update Win 7 Flash Player, any bit – that should be downloaded from Adobe (see links in AKB1000002)

One more reason to stay on 7 – no built in Flash, no Flash updates.

    • #143233

Downloaded in on October 26th.  No problems.  It did fix an issue in Firefox where FF would stall on loading Flash v.170 on a certain website.  Site did work OK with IE on old .170 version.  No issues with .183.

I can hardly wait for Flash to sunset so it forces some of these news websites to modernize..

Is there no way to get rid of Flash on Windows 10 for edge/ie, except by brute force?

      • #143331

Remove? No. The Registry Entries are hard-coded and protected. Turn off? Yes, but the updates will still need to be applied. Block content with extensions? Maybe, but doubtful it would be 100 percent effective.

        -- rc primak

        • #143419

Thank you for your answer, I have turned it off and do not use Edge. I did read a post elsewhere in where a person decided to remove Flash with brute force from Windows 10 which brought problems. 8/

          • #143553

Yep. You can force those Registry entries out of there. But it will result in a reinstall of Windows (8.0 through 10 current).

I avoid Flash like the plague and found alternatives to using it in all cases. Using Chrome I can easily avoid these issues but people using IE or Edge should just disable Flash altogether.

      Hi,

I see that my Windows 7 Pro, on two different computers, installed Flash Player 27 NPAPI Version 27.0.0183, on 10/25/2017.

I don’t actively use Flash Player, that I’m aware of, anyway.   I understand I shouldn’t uninstall it.  What about Adobe AIR?  Should that be uninstalled?

Thanks for all you folks do for us.

      Chip

      • #143820

If you are not using Adobe Air it can be uninstalled. If you keep it, it needs periodic updating like most Adobe products.

    • #144509

So far this update has re-installed it self 8 times since 11-03 on Win10 1607 x64.  Toshiba C-50A. I appears to repeat twice  day.
