Hello,

I’m trying to switch from internet mode to corporate/workgroup mode. I go into “Reconfigure Mail Support” and select the CW option there. Outlook tells me it needs to shut down then does so. When I restart it complains: “Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. MAPI32.dll is corrupt or the wrong version. This could be caused by installing other messaging software. Please reinstall Outlook.” and then shuts down.

Reinstalling Outlook sort of fixes things. I can launch Outlook again, but it comes up in internet mode. If I try to switch to CW mode, same error.

Looking in MSDN I found a Knowledge based article that suggested running fixmapi.exe to repair this problem, but that doesn’t work: fixmapi runs, but doesn’t fix my problem. I get the same error message.

Trying to terrify Outlook into submission by staring evilly at its icon hasn’t helped either

Can anybody suggest a solution, or do I have to rebuild my computer?

Hi, Paul. I’ve found that staring at it evilly only works in Outlook Express (wimpy little program that it is).

However, I did find another Technet article that describes your problem perfectly and simply wants you to rename mapi32.dll. Check it out. Hope it helps!

Alas not. I found two Mapi32.dll files, one in WinNTSystem32 and one in
so I renamed them both. But I still get the same error message.

Is there any way I could wipe out all traces of Mapi from my system then re-install that? I’m wondering if there is some left-over registry key that is messing up something. Is Mapi part of windows or office?

P.S. And whats this about Outlook being wimpy!! I’ve been using it for the last 3 years. I’m only checking out Outlook to see if it is better than GroupWise. If only Outlook could get its autocomplete email address feature right…sigh.

do you have other mapi services installed – like groupwise, eudora or winfax?

mapi is the messaging api – and part of windows.

when you reinstalled, were you ever given a change to choose what mail program to upgrade from? if so, choose none, the next screen should let you install as corp.

outlook 2002 does autocomplete.

#1. I can’t answer your questions about mapi.
#2. I said Outlook EXPRESS is wimpy.
#3. For the “autocomplete”, type in part of the person’s name and hit ctrl-k

If you decide to reinstall Office, use Eraser 2000 before reinstalling, which wipes the registry.

The Check Names feature, while handy, still doesn’t search more than one address book once it finds a match. The first single match it finds in the current address book it is searching in, it makes that selection, then skips looking in other address books.

Outlook 2000 has Automatic Name Checking as an option that can be set to automatically Check Names. So you can type part of someone’s email address tab on down to subject, and usually it’s started filling in the addresses as you’re typing a subject.

Thank you to all those who suggested solutions to my problem. I think MaryJ’s comment “the next screen should let you install as corp. ” was the key. I never got this message during setup…

I install Office infrequently for different machines so I setup an admin installation and use a setup transform file to do an install with my favourite install options. It usually works great and saves me going through the different choices: I just have a shortcut that does a silent install of Office.

Seems to be that if I install with a transform file like this then I don’t get the necessary bits for Outlook to change over into CW mode. Not even the installer redirects to send it back to the install image to get them

As usual its the things that you don’t know you don’t know that will get you.

Oh, and I meant to protest Dreamboats disparaging remarks about Outlook Express too (I hope they got rid of the marketing maven who picked those names, not their most creative day).

Its a great e-mail program (I use a PalmPilot for the calendar etc stuff that OE doesn’t do; works well for me). Its lightweight, has an uncluttered interface, and has had that great address autocomplete feature for a long time. And in the 3-4 years I’ve been using it, I don’t think it has ever crashed once. Definitely a well done to the developers

But now I want a little more, hence Outlook. The design seems pretty good (scripting? great!), but implementation…. well, time will tell

correct – very often the admin setups have all the options choosen so the user can’t screw anything up. It was created to only do the internet only install.
