Symbols not keeping current formatting

I have a user who often uses short cut keys to enter in special characters when he is typing a document in French. What we are seeing is that the inserted symbol is not maintaining the same format as the preceding character. The user will be typing in Century Schoolbook and then insert a special character which will appear in Arial.

Anyway to resolve this?

Does the special character’s formatting match his default formatting? Or, is he using a different formatting than the default formatting for this document? My thought is that if he changed the default formatting for this document only, the special character may be using the Word default formatting.

If that is the case, he may need to change the default formatting that Word uses, in order to get the special characters to use the desired format.

The inserted characters may not be available in Century Schoolbook, which has fewer than 700 characters covering only the basic Latin and Latin 1 supplement Unicode ranges. To have all needed characters in the same font, you may need to use another regular text font.

This behaviour typically indicates that the character isn’t supported in the chosen font. In such cases, Word substitutes a different font that does support the character. With Arial, for example, there are whole swathes of characters that it supports that Century Schoolbook doesn’t support. Ordinarily, though, I’d expect Word to replace an unsupported Century Schoolbook with the Times New Roman equivalent, as that’s a closer visual match.

If you select the aberrant character, then choose Insert|Symbol, you should see the character selected there. It will probably have the font name ‘(normal text)’ and the Unicode value. If you then change the font name to Century Schoolbook and the symbol selection disappears, that means it’s an unsupported character.
