Synching Outlook With Android

I have two Contacts folders in Outlook 2003 and I am about to buy an Android phone (Droid X from Verizon). Have any members synched multiple Contacts folders with an Android? I know (or at least I believe) this needs to be via gmail.

Are the contact folders on an Exchange Server that you plan to access using Exchange ActiveSync, or do they live solely on your PC in an Outlook Personal Folders file (PST)? In the latter case, I think you need a connector to shovel your data up to Google’s server, but I haven’t investigated in detail.

A site I often read for Android information is: Android Central[/url]. You might search the forums there to see how others have solved this problem. (And then let us know. )

Contacts in the Droid are based on Google Gmail, you have to have a Gmail account to use the phone. You can export your Outlook contacts, import them to your Gmail account and they will auto sync to your phone. There are a couple apps that supposedly sync contacts and calendar between the web based Gmail and your home based Outlook, but they don’t work well and are very flaky. I have no idea how you’d sync multiple folders with Google even if the sync programs worked correctly.

I came from longtime Outlook use and WinMo and, although I still use Outlook at work and home, I have given up trying to sync them with my Droid. I suggest if you have to have Outlook than you’d be better of with a WinMo phone, providing you can find one that actually works.

You might also check the Motorola Owners forum, supportforums.motorola.com as I know this and Exchange Server have been discussed many times.

Thanks guys. I don’t have an Exchange server – just common or garden Outlook residing on my PC and working with a variety of email accounts from multiple sources. I’ll try the Android forum. That is a great idea. I have also heard of a program called gsyncit. Maybe that is like the connector that Phil referred to.

You may find, as I did, that using Google is as good as, if not better than, Outlook. You can access your Gmail account from any computer and it does everything that Outlook does. Takes some weaning, but you can live without Outlook

I also have multiple email accounts on my Droid. Those other than Gmail use the Email app and it will handle IMAP and POP without a problem. You don’t have calendar info, say from Yahoo, but the email works fine. They also do not sync with your Gmail account, but you can do that with Google if you wish. I just didn’t have the need.

The reviews of gsyncit look good but I haven’t tried it. I might suggest, after you get your X and have it all setup and going, that you live with the Gmail for awhile and see how it works. Also, if you do try the third party route for sync, I would strongly suggest you export your Outlook contacts and calendar to CSV files and keep them handy. I love my Droid by the way, never had a smartphone that was this good, stable and useful. The X sounds good and I’ll be looking at it later this year as I rarely use the hard keyboard on mine because the onscreen one is so good.
