I just reinstalled my Outlook 2010 today and it says it is gong to take 11 hours to sync to my 1and1 IMAP account. Some 110,000 emails is a goodly amount, granted, but…

They are showing in my Outlook Inbox, so does that mean that they are in fact downloaded already?

11 Hours? To Sync? Really? Over a cable connection?

    Regards,

What showed up right away in your inbox was the email headers, not the actual emails. The 11 hours was the time required to download the actual emails.

Jim, I can see that…but just to be sure I reinstalled Outlook today, and then set up a new profile, and then started over. The download has been running since 10am, so, over eight hours, and is only half finished.

I cannot understand how/why it would take what will end up being over 24 hours to download the actual emails. I receive hundreds of emails daily, and at a rate of about 70 per hour, that would mean I would be dealing with multi-hour downloads every day. What is so different this time?

Due to my involvement with the Insider program, I have re-setup and/or re-configured my Outlook many times, but it has never taken this long to get back to “baseline” when adding Outlook. It may take an hour or even two, downloading several per second, but 24+ hours?

How did you arrive at 70 per hour? Looks like 7,000 per hour to me.

Here are some things which might be slowing you down:
      * You’re in the Insider program, so maybe they are trying out a new update on you, and maybe that new update is greatly slowing things down. If this is true, then others in the Insider program would be experiencing the same thing.
      * Perhaps 1and1 is having a server issue, which is slowing things down. If this is true, then other 1and1 customers will be experiencing the same thing.
      * Maybe there is an issue with your ISP. Can you try a different ISP (e.g. the wifi hotspot on your smart phone), to see if the problem is with them as well?
      * Maybe there is something wrong with your computer. You are using IMAP, so if you install Outlook 2010 on another similar computer, you will know if the problem exists there as well.
      * Try something other than Outlook, such as Thunderbird, on this same computer. Since you are using IMAP, it won’t hurt anything to do so. See if the problem exists there as well.

Jim, I can’t speak to the Insider issue…perhaps. But this would be – and is – an all-time first for me with Outlook. As for 1and1, I called them and they checked everything and said they saw nothing out of line. Then I called Cox (My ISP, and they saw nothing. I don’t have access to another computer, but I can try something like Thunderbird. I’ll let you know the outcome of that.

I installed and tried Thunderbird, and it seems that it was faster, although it did not seem to be actually downloading any but the headers. So I went back to Outlook and allowed it to finally finish its syncing.

      Now I have two questions:

It appears that each time I start Outlook there is an update of the cache that is performed. That makes sense, except that when one has many messages, the update can take a bit of a while. Does this (have to) happen with each and every startup?

      And then

While all this syncing is going on the animated cursor is dancing all over, making working with it a bit of a challenge. Is there a way to turn off the cursor animation?

      Chuck:

I have Outlook 2007, so I can’t completely compare my situation to yours (2010). But it shouldn’t be that different. It never takes me very long when I run Outlook — perhaps five minutes (10 at the most) for everything to be completely updated/synchronized. (I have about 10 GB of email in my box.) The fact that it is IMAP means that it has to synchronize whenever you run Outlook – that is the nature of IMAP. It has to synchronize at least the headers, so that your client (Outlook) will match what is on the server.

I don’t know anything about the animated cursor.

      Good luck!
