Synctoy Incompatible

I have moved over from Win7 to another laptop with win 8.1 as a stop gap until windows 10 gets its act together.  I have always used synctoy but when I try to install it on win8.1 I get an error message that it is a. “Incompatible Program”.  Initially install would not proceed because net framework version 2.05072 req’d to be installed. I then tried to install net 2. .Net Oct patches were all installed so I thought that would be ok. Any help as to how to get this up and running would be much appreciated, or a similar prog for my personal files saved to external drive (not cloud).  I have Acronis as my main backup to HDD. Thanks

I use AllwaySync https://allwaysync.com/

Very flexible and very reliable but a lot of options so suggest you play with it using a test file and remote folder  and make sure the remote drive always take the same reserved drive letter, before you commit anything important. Once you’ve got it up and running to your satisfaction, the profile can be copied to another machine or OS as required.

I think there’s a limit on file transfer per month on the free version so check the website.

I believe .NET 3.5 is sufficient for synctoy to install and function properly – might want to install that instead. As a bonus, it’s still patched and supported.

I have SyncToy 2.1 installed on a Win8.1 x64 Home system which is fully up-to-date.  NET Framework 4.8 is installed.

My notes show that I installed SyncToy in early 2018 as I rebuilt the system.  The lack of further comment indicates that I did not encounter any problems.

I used SyncToy yesterday to backup my data folders.  It worked as expected.

I have net framework 4 but when I try to install synctoy the setup error requires net 2.0.5  Do not understand why it won’t install. Reluctant to download 2.0.5 and install incase it clashes with later installed versions of .net

Open a command prompt as administrator and run the following. Then try installing SyncToy again:

dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFx3 /all

I am obviously doing something wrong.  Trying to come to grips with new to me win8 with only an onscreen keyboard (no win key).  I thought as I am the only user and signed in I would automatically have been administrator.  Installed office 2010 no problem. Is there a way round this?

You’re not running the command prompt as an administrator; it would say Administrator in the title bar if you were.. The easiest way to do it is to right-click the Start button and you’ll see Command Prompt (Admin) as an option.

You need an elevated command prompt – can you right-click using that on-screen keyboard? If so, right-click whatever cmd icon you’re launching the command shell from and select run as administrator.

I have all my data and programs on separate partitions. When I go from one opsys to another, I copy the entire Firefox profile and the Thunderbird address book. The rest is easy. When I am doing dual boot I just point both systems at the appropriate partitions. Easy change.

FWIW, I used SyncToy for a long time, but switched to FreeFileSync a few years ago.   It’s open source, donation based, but available free.  I started with free, but found it so good I now donate.  I have no affiliation.  Use it everyday.  https://freefilesync.org/

It scans clean on virustotal and jotti.

Shall have a look.  I did try the Allwaysync but it had a problem finding some folders although they were definitely in the selected path. Shall persevere and thanks to all replies. Much appreciated. Cheers

+1 for FreeFileSync. I use it to keep the data partition of my production, test, and laptop systems in sync. Works like a charm and I have lots of options which I like.  I use the Mirror option as I have some programs on the test machine that I don’t want synced back to the production machine. HTH 😎

Had a quick look at FreeFileSync, downloaded the donation version, and although early days I give it the thumb up.  Should suit my needs perfectly.  Thanks for all the helpful replies to my post.

If none of the above suggestions work, then try installing SyncToy in compatibility mode – in this way, you can force SyncToy to install with Windows 7 rules.

Here’s how to do this:
* Right-click on the install program (e.g. setup.exe) and choose “Troubleshoot compatibility”. * Click “Troubleshoot Program”, which will bring you to a screen with a few options.
* Check only one box (uncheck all others): “The program worked in earlier versions of Windows, but won’t install or run now.” Click Next.
* Choose Windows 7 and click Next.
* Click “Test the program…” — SyncToy will be installed with Windows 7 rules in this step. Once the install of SyncToy has completed, click Next.
* Click “Yes, save these settings for this program”.
* On the next screen, choose “Close the troubleshooter”.

SyncToy has now been installed using Windows 7 rules. To make sure that it always runs using Windows 7 rules, you can set the icon to compatibility mode as well:
* Right-click on the icon and choose Properties.
* Click the compatibility tab (at the top of the pop-up).
* Near the bottom of the pop-up, click “Change settings for all users”. (This is an optional step.)
* About 1/3 of the way down, in the Compatibility Mode section, check the box “Run this program in compatibility mode for…”.
* Choose Windows 7 from the drop down box, then click Apply at the bottom of the pop-up.
* Close the pop-up.

hi Jim  Tried your suggestion but still only get as far as before ie requires .net framework do you want to get it from the web.  When I looked at this download link  I was at a loss how to proceed (see shot).  As far as I was aware .net was already installed on my pc as I get .net monthly patches.  Is this download something else?

Solved.  I tried to install another old program, quicken, and that run into the same problem. It asked permission to install files needed and then proceeded to install successfully.  I then went back to Synctoy which then also installed okay.  I am now a happy chappie and have two sync programs as I was trying freefilesync (good) as an option.  Thanks to everyone for your input.
