Hello everyone. I’m new to Woody’s Lounge and hope that help is out theresmile

I use MS Office 2000 Professional–problem occurs when I’m using MS Word (no other part of Office). While typing into a new document, or modifying a former document and saving as new, the entire computer freezes up. I am not able to CTL ALT DEL or use ESC. It requires a hard-boot.

This problem does not occur in any other software program, MS Office or not. I have also run the “repair office” function from the original discs, to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciatedsmile

Hi Gerri, Is locking up on saving only or if you say yes to save on closing the document?

      • #1787315

Thanks for your response and query Karen. In answer to your question, no. It will lock up right in the middle of typing. I know I’m a fast typist, but I doubt that’s the problem. It appears to be worse if I am editing a previous document rather than when I start a completely new document, but it does happen in both instances.

The reason I wanted you to clarify when it was happening, is that I have experienced Word 2000 crashing when the user closes a document and says Yes to save. After querying this forum and receiving ideas and help from many people, we think that it is because there are customised toolbars, and I’ve had to replace Word’s FileClose and DocClose with a macro of my own.

However, I haven’t heard of anyone having the problem that you describe, so I’m afraid I can’t help further. Good luck with your investigation.

            Hi,

            Experiencing a similar problem: (2000 SR-1, NT 4.0)

Starting to create a document based on a template. The build un dialog box opens as it shall. But when the appropriate text boxes are filled in and the OK button is clicked, nothing more happens; i.e. word is locked.

Going to the Task Manager tells me that Word is not responding. the only way of getting out is to “End Task”.

The OK button closes the dialog box and should give me Word’s “Save as” dialog box.

The freezing occurs on only some machines.

What could cause the problem? May be some wrong settings in the register?

Any ways of checking/reseting the register?

            Regards
            Bjorn

There are always a number of things going on at any one time while you are working in Word. These include Word autosaves, periodic e-mail downloads by your mail client, network broadcasts by Windows, etc. etc. Some other things that can be related to mysterious crashes include chat software, “hardware acceleration” for your graphics card, browser refreshes (e.g., if you leave a browser window open on a portal home page, it refreshes every 10 minutes or so), and wireless peripheral “blackouts.” If these ideas don’t lead anywhere, tell us more about your computing environment.

      Gerri,

Perhaps your Normal.dot file is corrupted. Have you tried deleting it? Since you don’t say which version of Windows you are using, I can’t tell you where it is.

Thanks jscher2000 and Flip—sorry, I’m new at this and forgot to put the version for you. When I checked under “My Computer” and then MS Office and Winword it showed Version 9.0.2717. Hope this helps. It is obvious that I am way out of my element, a number of the suggestions I don’t even know how to tackle but will do my best and see what happens. Thanks for all the support!

That’s OK. Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification. Every contributor here was once a beginner with Word. For my suggestion, I should have told you to just do a search on your hard drive from the Start menu for Normal.dot and delete every instance you find.

Flip–thanks for the suggestion. Found it in the Windows/Application Data/Templates folder, and only found one instance of the file. Done and done. Now I’ll go play in word and see if it does it again. Thanks so much, everyone, for all your help.
