System Restore incomplete (Home, SP2)

Hello –

I have received this message after trying 3 different points, 2 different months. I then disabled Norton scan; tried again. Still got incomplete message. I then turned SR off, did a complete virus scan, ran AdAware, enabled SR. Still got Incomplete. There is nothing in event log, under

System Restore is NOT a replacement for system backup or imaging.
Seemly your Restore Points do not contain enough information to restore your installation. Restore your backup or image (if you have one), otherwise try to undo changes manually.

Thank you for answering.

“Seemingly your Restore Points do not contain enough information to restore your installation.” I’m puzzled: I had 3 restore points, and different months, so – presumably – there was enough information.

At this point, after disabling/enabling, I have the one restore point: this morning’s.

The Restore has not been working for, approximately, a month (that I’m aware of, since I don’t try to restore often at all).

Is there not some way to get it functioning again?

Sorry I was not clear. When I said “Restore Points do not contain enough information”, I mean that changes was made on your computer went beyond the scope monitored by System Restore.
It does not matter how many restore points System Restore holds: some changes can not be undone by System Restore in principle.

Once again: your System Restore is functioning properly, but it is NOT a replacement for Backup. If you tell which changes you want to be undone, it will be possible to give you more specific advice.

Thank you, again. for your time. It is my ignorance of SR, not your explanations, that causes me to question….

I had received a message about a Crosseyes template being perhaps corrupt (sorry, don’t remember the full message), so I thought to restore the system to the day before I received that message.

How can one tell SR is OK? If one cannot roll back the system, how is that ok? What does incomplete mean? I thougth I had read it was a possible indication of a virus, thus my cleaning the system.

Sorry to inflict this on you, but I do become frustrated when I cannot understand.

1. You receive the message that one of files (Crosseyes template) is corrupt. If you read FAQ for Windows Restore attentively, you must note that such files (as well as DOSs, JPGs, ets) are NOT monitored by System Restore. The proper course of action is to restore the file from Backup or to download it from Crosseyes once again.

2. To check status of System Restore on your computer, open Services manager (click Start | Run, type SERVICES.MSC and hit Enter) and navigate to System Restore Service. This service should startup automatically and status should be Started. If Startup Type is set to Automatic and Status is not “Started” (i.e. blank), open Event Viewer (Start | Run > eventvwr) and search for errors under System from Service Control Manager.

3. “Incomplete” restore means that the system is operational, but not in the same status as it was when Restore Point was created.

4. Again and again:
The System Restore program that comes with Windows XP is designed to backup the Operation System ONLY. The primary goal of providing you with the ability to just backup the Operating System is to get the computer operational when it will not boot. With XP
