A friend’s computer is infected by SYSTEM SECURITY 2009. She is running Windows XP Home Edition. I went to Control Panel, ADD/REMOVE programs and found the listing there but when I click on REMOVE, it says the program is not installed. I did find that the desktop icon for System Security 2009 is really a shortcut to 19409844.exe. I went into MSCONFIG and unchecked the startup of 19409844.exe so it does not automatically startup. I tried to do a SYSTEM RESTORE (in both safe mode and normal mode) but there are no restore points available. I had installed Malwarebytes a few weeks ago on their system but when I try to open it, nothing happens.

How do I get rid of this rogue program? Thanks for your help.

Hi Big Al, do you think the AUTOMATIC REMOVAL tool is safe to download and use?

The “automatic removal tool” is Spyware Doctor from PCTools. The free trial version will detect, but not remove any malware – you have to buy it to enable the removal function. I’d try the manual removal instructions available from many sites – do a Google search – first.

See Remove System Security 2009/4.51 (Removal Info) For XP/Vista for instructions. Note that the name of the .exe varies from case to case – where the article mentions 05643921.exe, substitute 19409844.exe.
