I use Windows Task Scheduler to perform various jobs. For the past several weeks, under “Maintenance-Disk cleanup,” which I schedule to run on Day 1 of every month at 3:30 a.m., the following appears:
Status: Missed.
I assume this means that Task Scheduler was not behaving the way it should. How do I fix this?
I don’t turn off the computer at night, so except for a screen-saver that kicks in after ten minutes, the machine is always awake.

Hi Walter:
There are a number of settings under Task Manager, including wait a certain number of minutes of the computer being idle before starting it & stopping it if something else ocurrs. You may have a conflicting program.

Unless I have a program that will access the Internet (such as to check the time), I shut down everything except Explorer & systray. I don’t even see the need for a screen saver; that may be interferring. Just use the power management settings & a blank screen. You’ll find the computer will save resources for what you really need it for.

I especially find that scandisk is sensitive to anything else running.

Thanks, Phil. I checked my Task Scheduler and found that there were indeed tasks that could possibly conflict with others. Some are scheduled weekly, others monthly, and at certain times, those two could interfere with each other.

Now, how do you turn off most of Windows features overnight and leave just a couple running? When I go to the Start menu and click on Shut Down, it turns off everything.

Hi Walter:
Ctrl+Alt+Delete. This will bring up a dialog box select an item & press end task. The dialog box will close. Repeat that step for everything except Explorer & Systray. Some items you may need to do 2 or 3 times before they close…or a message comes up saying something about being busy & do you want to wait or end task. Click end task.

Install this utility & put a shortcut on your desktop or start menu. It will automatically shut down everything you want & leave what you want left alone.
