I click on the Task View button to see documents I have recently opened. I click on an XLS file (xyzzy.xls). That’s XLS, not XLSX. I get a message saying

This file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action. Please install an app or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Apps Settings Page.

On the Default Apps Settings Page it says that there is indeed a default app for XLS files, and it is Excel 2016, as expected.

What’s up with this? How can I get Task View to work properly?

      Right-click on xyzzy.xls

Select “Open with” > “Choose another app”

Select Excel 2016 and check the box “Always use this app to open .xls files”
