From your viewpoint, what’s the difference between tasks and appointment?
Both are closely similar.
Do you use task often?
Personally I find Appointment extremely useful.

I use both! Tasks for example: I get an e-mail that I need to reply to, but cant do it right away, I drag to tasks. Or for bills that come in that I need to pay next week I do the same and flag for follow up.
As for appointments. that is exactly what I use it for. Like making an appointment with my tax advisor for Friday!

You’re welcome. Of course this assumes that you are using Office ’07. I don’t remember if the dragging and dropping works in Office ’03

Both have their uses. Think of them this way:

an appointment is setting aside a particular date & amount of time for a specific purpose. If you are an environment where people schedule meetings using Outlook your appointments will be taken into consideration when Outlook is determining your availability.

a task is something you need to finish by a certain date & time but do not need to schedule specific time to accomplish the task. More of a reminder that you need to complete something.

The most obvious one is that Appointments appear as a Calendar item and Tasks do not. Also, Tasks can be delegated in an Exchange environment and carry start, due date and completion information not in an Appointment. But yes, I often use zero minute duration Appointments as a sort of task reminder. One frustration for me is that I use a Windows Mobile phone, and recurring tasks do not get picked up in synchronization, where single event tasks do.

In 2000 though 2003 you could create the Appointment and insert the Task as an item into the Appointment body, but it’s such an inelegant klugy solution.
